Faculty, Staff, Student and Alumni Accomplishments
- Silvia Bettez (ELC) gave an invited diversity workshop at Salem College.
- Drs. Jose Villalba (former faculty), Laura Gonzalez, DiAnne Borders, and Erik Hines (CED) recently were awarded almost $44,000 by the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) to develop a curriculum (English and Spanish versions) for parents to help them support and guide their children through the college planning process. The sub-contract was part of the federally funded College Access Grant awarded to UNC.
- Melissa Kruep is quoted in the Campus Weekly feature “Recalling the week of Sept. 11, 2001”
- Graduate student and alum, Karri Barrett (TEHE) was awarded a full conference registration to the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) 40th Anniversary Conference from NAAEE’s Disney Planet Challenge Scholarship program. The NAAEE awards only one scholarship per year.
Announcements
- The University Libraries and the School of Education will host Emmy-winning storyteller and children's author, Bobby Norfolk, on Monday, September 12. In the EUC Auditorium There will be three performances, one at 9:30 a.m. for local 4th grade students, and one at 12:30 p.m. for 4th grade students and UNCG education majors, and one at 7:00 p.m. that is open to the public. After the 12:30 performance, Bobby will provide a question and answer session for UNCG students. Please share this information with your classes/students and encourage them to attend this fun and informative event.

- Human Resource Services will host open forums: Sept. 12 – 2 p.m., Maple Room, EUC and Sept. 13 – 10 a.m., Maple Room, EUC. They will answer questions regarding legislation, budgets, benefits, training, etc.
- The 2011 Symposium on Music Teacher Education will be held on the UNCG campus next weekend, September 15-17. There will be over 200 guests from 38 states and Canada; the symposium will include 66 presentation sessions and two poster sessions. Dr. Deborah Meier, Senior Scholar at the Steinhardt School of Education and a past recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship will kick off the symposium with her talk titled, Art is the First Language of Humanity, followed by a reception in the Recital Hall Atrium. This event will take place next Thursday evening, September 15, at 7:00 PM in the Recital Hall in the Music Building on the UNCG Campus.
- The SOE Dedication Celebration begins next Monday with the Coalition for Diverse Language Communities media presentation, Community Voices starting at 8:30 in SOEB lobby. Please visit the Dedication Celebration website for a calendar of all events.
- "Deaf Kiss-Fist" event to celebrate National Deaf Awareness Week, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25th in the EUC auditorium, see flyer here for more information.
