Keith Mobley (CED) was recently named to a 2 year term on the HealthyUNCG Advisory Committee by Chancellor Brady.
Heidi Carlone (TEHE) and her TED 370 (Science in the Elementary School) class for dual majors, participated as judges for the Guilford County Science Fair.

Dean Wixson has been selected to join the International Reading Association’s newly formed Literacy Research Panel. The panel, chaired by Dr. P. David Pearson (University of California at Berkeley), will respond to critical literacy issues facing policymakers, school administrators, teacher educators, classroom teachers, parents and the general public, according to a release.
The Teaching Fellows will be sponsoring a movie night to watch and discuss the film American Teacher and would like to invite all interested students in the School of Education to attend. The movie night will take place on Thursday, February 9 from 7:00 to 9:30 pm in room 120 of the School of Education Building. See flyer for more info.
In honor of Black History Month, Joseph Hill (SES) will present a talk titled "Hidden Treasures of Black American Sign Language" on Thursday, February 16th at 6 p.m. at the Greensboro Public Library- Benjamin Branch. For more information see flyer or contact Carole Campbell Brown at 373-7540.
John E. Straub, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Boston University
Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2011-12 will present a public lecture: “A Lively Tour of the Periodic Table” on Thursday, February 16, 7:30 PM, Room 201 Sullivan Science Building. This lecture explores the diverse properties of the chemical elements through the use of historical accounts and demonstrations of chemical reactions.
Sam Wineburg, professor of education at Stanford University (brother of Bob Wineburg, Social Work) will present a talk on Howard Zinn, sponsored by the Public History program at UNCG. It is titled: A History With No Hands: Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States and the Development of Popular Historical Consciousness Stanford University on Feb. 17 at 2pm, School of Education Building, Room 120.
On Tuesday, February 28, at 6 p.m. in the Alumni House Dean Wixson, will present "Current Issues in Education; Common Core Standards in Language Arts". This presentation will provide background on the development of the common core state standards, which have been adopted by 46 states including North Carolina. It will also describe specific features of the English language arts standards and proposed new state assessments. This is part of the UNCG Alumni Association’s Around the House series.

The School of Education is collaborating with the Piedmont Triad Education Consortium to present a summer Professional Development Symposium during the week of June 18-22, 2012. Our goal is to make UNCG SOE faculty expertise available to practitioners in the region to strengthen the connections between research and practice. PTEC will pay faculty a stipend of $500 per day to plan and present sessions on topics of your choosing that may be of interest to educators in our region. The Old Town Run is on March 17th. It's a 5-mile run around campus that raises money for Special Olympics. You can run or walk, and kids are welcome as well. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Mentoring/Advising/Supervising (MAS) Award is Two MAS Awards are given, one designated for tenured faculty and the other for untenured faculty. The award is pertinent to both undergraduate and graduate levels of education. The nomination materials are available here.
The Professions in Deafness program will host its annual ASL Idol competition on April 1st.
The School of Education will honor Drs. Sally Berenson (TEHE), Billie Durham (LIS), Francine Johnston (TEHE), and Ada Vallecorsa (Dean’s Office) for their dedicated service to the SOE at our annual retirement celebration on April 3rd from 4-6 p.m. in the SOE Lobby. The Triad Teacher Research Conference will be April 25, 2012 (6 to 9 PM) in the School of Education. Proposals for the conference are due on February 15 and can be found here. Please encourage your students in all areas and levels of education to submit a proposal and/or plan to attend on the 25th.
