Introduction of The School of Education at UNCG
The School of Education is known throughout North Carolina, the Southeast and the nation for the quality of its students, programs, faculty, and partnerships with the public and private sector.
- We are consistently ranked among the top 50 Schools of Education in the nation as determined by the survey conducted each year and published by the U.S. News and World Report.
- Our teacher education faculty extends throughout the 16 departments on our UNCG campus and is dedicated to preparing preservice teachers to become professional educators, commited to meeting the needs of all learners.
- Our students studying to become teachers spend over 1000 hours working in schools before student teaching, which is the best preparation for preservice teachers.

University Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
Well-qualified students with 30 transferable semester hours or more of college credit from a regionally accredited institution are encouraged to transfer to UNCG to continue their studies. Transfer students must also meet UNC-system Minimum Course Requirements (MCR). See http://adm.dept.uncg.edu/faq/ for specific information.
A student who has college credit totaling fewer than 30 transferable semester hours from a regionally accredited institution is designated a "freshman transfer" and must meet requirements under both transfer and freshman admissions programs. Freshman transfer students must also submit an official SAT or ACT score.

Admission to Teacher Education
To be admitted into a teacher education program, the following requirements must be met:
- Grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 (some departments require a GPA higher than a 2.5 to be admitted to teacher education). To determine if students meet this standard, the GPA is calculated using relevant undergraduate coursework.
- Completion of at least 12 semester hours at UNCG (some licensure programs require specific courses for admission; see the Student Advising Center transfer advisor for details).
- Recommendation of the school or department where major is to be taken.
- Achievement of minimum score requirements as set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on the Pre-Professional Skills Test.
*** The 12 semester hours shall be waived for any transfer student who meets ALL the aforementioned requirements for admission to Teacher Education. The grade point average will be the transferable GPA as computed by Admissions

Programs in teacher education are offered at UNCG in the three broad areas listed below

- Social Studies (Comprehensive) Students may major in anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology.
Transfer Course Equivalency Information
Transfer Articulation, a division of the University Registrar's Office, is responsible for entering transfer credit coursework into the student's official record. They also are responsible for determining how other higher education institutions coursework transfers into UNCG. After students have been officially admitted to UNCG, they will develop and provide each student with a Transfer Equivalency Worksheet . This will provide a detailed report of how your previous coursework has transferred to UNCG: as elective credit, general education requirements, or to meet major requirements.

Prospective Students
Transfer/Adult Students
The School of Education is committed to providing transfer/adult students with the assistance and support needed to enroll and excel in our teacher education programs. Our transfer academic advisor in The Student Advising Center is available to assist prospective teacher education students with a variety of academic services to ensure a smooth, seamless transition to UNCG. Once admitted to the University, all students are assigned an academic advisor within their department to assist with course registration, developing an educational plan, and understanding curriculum and graduation requirements, as well as, University academic policies and procedures.
Like our native UNCG students, transfer/adult and second degree seeking students, after formal admission to the University, must make a formal application and meet specific requirements for admission to their prospective teacher education program (see department for teacher education admission/application requirements). Students are encouraged to meet with the transfer advisor in the School of Education Student Advising Center and the academic advisor/program coordinator for their interested program prior to admission to UNCG or prior to their first semester, to develop an educational plan for completing their degree.
Transfer students from NC Community Colleges
Students who began an AA or AS curriculum in the fall of 1997 or later at any North Carolina community college are eligible to transfer credits under the terms of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) between the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina Community College System:
- Students who graduate with an AA or AS degree from any North Carolina community college, with "C" grades or better in the core curriculum, normally will receive 64 hours of credit and junior standing upon admission to UNCG. General education requirements will be considered complete. * Students pursuing majors in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete the CAR Foreign Language Requirement.
- Students who do not graduate, but who complete the 44-semester hour General Education Core with a grade of "C" or better in each course may transfer this core upon admission to UNCG to complete UNCG general education requirements.
- Students who neither graduate nor complete the General Education Core will transfer courses according to the UNCG Course Equivalency List for NC Community Colleges
Adult Students
Adult students have been a significant part of UNCG's undergraduate student body since the University's founding in 1892. Currently, approximately one quarter of our undergraduate students are age 24 or older. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions understands the unique needs of adult students and evaluates students individually for admission. If you are a prospective adult student, we encourage you to meet with an adult admissions advisor to develop a plan for continuing your studies at UNCG. To schedule an appointment, call 336.334.5243. Once admitted to the University, the Office for Adult Students offers further support.
2PLUS ( Applied Associates Degree - AAS)
If you have earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Early Child Education, you may be eligible for admission through UNCG's 2Plus program. The mission of the 2Plus program is to help community college graduates transfer to UNCG with advanced standing and pursue specific teacher education majors in Birth-Kindergarten (licensure) , Elementary Education , Special Education (general) and Auditory/Oral Birth-Kindergarten . Students who are interested in the 2PLUS program are encouraged to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission at 336-334-5243 for specific admission requirements.
Second Degree
Students interested in pursuing a second degree in a teacher education program should contact the academic advisor/program coordinator of your program of interest prior to admission to the University. Some programs offer alternative routes to licensure without the necessity of completing a second undergraduate degree.
Generally, second degree students are waived from completing additional undergraduate General Education Core (GEC) requirements and the Praxis I exam. However, they are still required to meet any additional major/program requirements for admission to teacher education.
