Dean's Message

Dale Schunk, Dean Welcome to the UNCG School of Education!

We take pride in being one of the best professional schools of education in North Carolina and the nation. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are outstanding and prepare learners to be successful teachers, counselors, administrators, library and media specialists, and educational researchers. Our faculty members are top researchers and experts in their fields of study, but they also care about students and help them attain their professional and personal goals.

What distinguishes the UNCG School of Education as one of the best?

  • We have one of North Carolina's top teacher education programs, as judged by the State Department of Public Instruction.
  • Our students studying to become teachers spend over 1,000 hours in schools working with teachers to help children learn, which prepares our students well to become teachers.
  • Our graduate program in counseling ranks 7th in the nation on the latest survey by U. S. News and World Report.
  • School of Education departments and affiliated units used over $11 million last year in grant and contract funds to support research and training projects, which places us among the highest of any School of Education in the nation.
  • The School of Education Students First Campaign raised over $6.8 million in the past three years for scholarships, professorships, and academic programs.

Among our several outreach activities and affiliated units are:

  • The Southeastern Regional Vision for Education (SERVE) improves education in the southeastern states through its role as a major federally-funded educational research laboratory. SERVE recently received a five-year $37.7 million contract.
  • Our Counseling and Consulting Clinic offers a wide-range of counseling and evaluation services for faculty, staff, students, and community members, and provides exceptional training opportunities for students in counselor education programs.
  • The Office of Recruitment and Retention sponsors recruitment fairs and campus visits to recruit students into teacher education, and works with school systems to raise retention of teachers and educational leaders.
  • The School of Education Department of Specialized Education Services recruits students into special education through various Special Education Recruitment projects funded by the federal government.
  • The Center for Educational Studies and Development sponsors professional development workshops and hosts the ChildrenŐs Festival and Health Celebration and the Young WritersŐ Conference.
  • The Center for Educational Research and Evaluation assists faculty and students with statistical design and data analyses and serves as an evaluation consultant on externally-funded projects.

This sample of our exemplary activities shows that the UNCG School of Education is a dynamic place where research, teaching, and service, work together to improve education. Our graduate programs are flexible and well-suited to work schedules. With a few exceptions, programs allow students to attend part time. We have a number of alternative licensure programs to help persons in other careers become licensed teachers.

The School of Education offers financial assistance through scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students. We manage 65 scholarship opportunities, which are available to students in any of our six academic departments. This year almost $452,000 was awarded to students on a need or merit basis. Funds were used to support 32 graduate students and 72 undergraduates.

Whether you plan a career in teaching or another educational field we have programs to fit your needs and expand your horizons. We would be pleased to have you join our learning community!
