Department of Counseling and Educational Development (CED)

Notable Characteristics

The counselor education program and its faculty have been recognized with national awards for program excellence as well as faculty scholarship, professional leadership, and student mentoring. All degree programs have national accreditation. Students have access to several professional counseling organizations (National Board for Certified Counselors, ERIC/CASS, Chi Sigma Iota) located in Greensboro. The master's program features extensive supervised clinical experiences in the Department's on-site, state-of-art clinic as well as field placements. Doctoral students are involved in supervised teaching and clinical supervision experiences. Students are encouraged to become active in professional service and leadership, as well as research and writing for publication. Graduates are offered highly competitive salaries based on degree and employment setting.

Notable Characteristics

This department offers eleven concentrations in its master's degree programs and two concentrations in its doctoral degree programs. Faculty are nationally known in their fields. The Teacher Education and Development doctoral program prepares teacher educators in the context of a Professional Development School model. Faculty and graduate students engage in collaborative research in the department's focus areas. Demand for graduates is high.

Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations (ELC)

Notable Characteristics

The Department takes pride in being a student-friendly department. In addition to high-quality teaching and advising, many of the faculty are highly visible nationally, with some being known for their scholarly work; others for their work with schools, school districts, and school renewal efforts; and others for their leadership in national education organizations. Additionally, the Department serves as the new home for the Journal of School Leadership. The Department offers one of the nation's largest doctoral programs in cultural foundations and houses one of only two such programs in the state. It is also one of only eight North Carolina universities offering a Master of School Administration degree.

Department of Educational Research Methodology (ERM)

Notable Characteristics

This department offers the only doctoral program in North Carolina in Educational Research Methodology. The nationally and internationally known faculty are regular contributors to the professional knowledge base in their field. In addition to their academic teaching and research, they collectively have experience working with such organizations as the Educational Testing Service, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, American College Testing, the National Board of Medical Examiners, and the Law School Admission Council. National demand for ERM graduates from the master's and doctorate programs is very high.

Department of Library and Information Studies (LIS)

Notable Characteristics

This department offers a master's degree program in library and information studies that is accredited by the American Library Association. Faculty hold doctoral degrees from a variety of recognized institutions, have experience in varied library and information center careers, and contribute regularly to the library profession through scholarship and professional service. Program focus is on training librarians and information professionals for their first professional position. There are strong emphases on traditional librarianship and on technology-based communication in the information field. Demand for graduates is high. Most are offered positions in the library field before they graduate.

Department of Specialized Education Services (SES)

Notable Characteristics

This department offers undergraduate and advanced master's programs in special education, early childhood special education, and education of deaf children, including auditory oral training and birth-kindergarten licensure. These programs are recognized for their emphases on collaboration, family-centered services, and leadership development. The nationally and internationally known faculty regularly contribute to the professional literature through their books, journal articles, videotapes, and other professional materials. They stay in touch with practicing professionals through their extensive service activities. This work includes serving on professional and community boards and taking leadership roles in national associations such as the Council for Exceptional Children (including the Division for Early Childhood, the Division on Learning Disabilities, the Council for Children with Behavior Disorders, and the Teacher Education Division) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Demand for graduates is very high.
