Seminars


Each UNCG Teaching Fellows class meets as a group. Fellows automatically have thirty-five to sixty new acquaintances with whom to share the Teaching Fellows experience.

Freshmen Experience:

The freshmen seminar classes are designed to assist first-year Teaching Fellows into the academic and social systems of higher education and provide an introduction to the field of public school education. Some of the activities/topics included are:

  • Freshman retreat
  • Autobiography: My school experiences in the community where I live
  • Snap Shot
  • Vision Process—Teachers as Leaders
  • Round tables: Introduction to Education
  • Group Presentations on educationally themed book
  • Elementary School Internships
"Before the Freshman Retreat, I knew only the names of a few Teaching Fellows, but after the Retreat was over I had made so many new friends and I learned a lot about all the Teaching Fellows. Now, we all hang out and even go to lunch or dinner together after class."

Sophomore Experience:

The sophomore seminar classes are designed to assist sophomore Teaching Fellows in exploring their beliefs about teaching with emphasis on cultural, legal, and ethical dimensions of teaching in schools. Some of the activities/topics included are:

  • Middle School Internships
  • School Service
  • English as a Second Language (ESOL) Training
  • Legal/Ethical/Classroom Management Issues "What Should I do if ...? "

Junior Experience:

The junior seminar classes are designed to assist junior Teaching Fellows in exploring the community aspects of teaching to diversity. Some of the activities/topics included are:

  • Privilege Walk
  • Bridge Activity
  • Camera Safari
  • Debunk the Community
  • Round Tables
  • Community Adventures
  • School Internships
  • Meet in Schools and Community centers

Senior Experience:

The senior seminar courses are designed to assist senior Teaching Fellows in synthesizing learnings from prior Teachings Fellows seminars and preparing for positions in public schools. Some of the activities/topics included are:

  • Student Teaching
  • Vision Process
  • Senior Retreat
  • Nuts and Bolts of Going into the Profession
  • How does what I’ve learned impact my teaching?
  • Home Visits
