CONNECT: GTCC and UNCG Partnership for Teacher Education

CONNECT ONE: Getting Started at GTCC

teaching.jpg

Beginning your teacher training at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) provides an alternative for prospective teachers who want to obtain a degree in education but who cannot or do not want to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) immediately after high school. Prospective teachers can complete two years of general education course requirements that are tailored to meet the requirements to complete a teacher licensure program at UNCG. To complete transfer requirements, students must have completed 64 specific credit hours in one of the Associate of Arts pre-major education programs at GTCC. In addition, students must have submitted applications to the UNCG Office of Admissions and the Teachers Academy, have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA (some program areas require a higher GPA), and have received passing scores on the PRAXIS I for reading, mathematics, and writing. Some program areas require specific courses for admissions. A UNCG School of Education transfer advisor is available to meet with students to assist with a successful transfer.

CONNECT TWO: Completing Your Bachelor Degree at UNCG uncg teaching

The UNCG School of Education is known throughout North Carolina, the Southeast and the nation for the quality of its students, programs, faculty, and partnerships to promote excellence in education. Your Associate Degree will prepare you to continue in one of the following program areas:

  • Birth-Kindergarten (Early Childhood)
  • Elementary Education (Gr. K—6)
  • Middle Grades Education (Gr. 6—9)

Choices include anthropology, art history, studio art, classical studies, communication studies, English, geography, history, mathematical sciences, philosophy, physics and astronomy, political science, psychology, religious studies, or sociology. In addition, a concentration can be selected from and interdisciplinary course of study including American studies, environmental studies, language and communications, science, the arts (music, art, theatre), global studies, diversity, French, or Spanish.

A dual major in Elementary Education and Special Education is offered.

Other KEY CONNECTIONS

Assessments for Beginning Teachers

other connection picturePraxis I: Academic Skills Assessments in reading, writing, and mathematics required for admission to teacher education.
Praxis II: Subject Assessments required for licensure in elementary and special education.
Teaching Portfolio: Evidence required to document teaching and technology competencies.

Clinical Practice

In all program areas, students combine a rigorous academic program with extensive clinical practice during the junior and senior years. Internship and student teaching placements are made in Guilford County Schools as well as in other Piedmont Triad school districts. Efforts are made to balance experiences between urban/suburban and rural school settings.

Licensure

Licensure is the process through which an individual qualifies to be licensed by the State of North Carolina to teach. All public schools and many private schools in North Carolina require their professional educators to hold a license. One month prior to graduation, the student will apply for North Carolina Licensure. A completed application is submitted to the Teachers Academy, which sends it on to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction following an official clearance by the UNCG Registrar's Office.
