Did you know that beginning in August 2004 the School of Education added an Office of Recruitment, Retention and Professional Development? If not, then you need to know that we are seriously charging forward in efforts to recruit talented educators and retain those of you who are among the best in the field of education. Recruitment and retention of our educational workforce is one of the priorities for the School of Education, as it is for the entire UNC system and the state of North Carolina.

Conscientious efforts are being made to recruit and retain students in teacher education. Efforts include planning and hosting campus events specifically designed for future teachers, making visitations to Piedmont Triad high schools, participating in college fairs and recruitment events in cooperation with the Admissions Office, and providing teacher education opportunities for college students. To find out more about each of these opportunities and others, go to Campus Events for High School Students and Teacher Education Opportunities for College Students.

Not only are we working to recruit educators, but we are also working to retain educators in the field. One way to retain educators in the profession is through professional development. Efforts are made to support Piedmont Triad School Districts in their professional development needs for administrators and teachers. A directory of professional development offerings has been developed and includes UNCG faculty who have interest in providing support to districts. Mutually beneficial are professional development offerings that meet multi-district needs as well as support research conducted by our talented university faculty. Go to Professional Development to see what is available.

You, too, can help us with our recruitment and retention efforts! First, by letting me know how we can continue to support you as one of our most valuable educational resources. Next, by helping recruit talented future teachers into the field of education. Last but not least, by telling me how you would like to get involved with the School of Education such as speaking to future teachers or teacher education students, assisting with a recruitment event, or helping plan events. Check out the Alumni in Action link and see who is already onboard! I hope you will find a way to support the recruitment and retention of teachers.

Sincerely,

Ginger G. Parnell
