June 19, 2008 and August 14, 2008: Beyond the Walls: National Board Certification Renewal
Join NBCT, Joan Celestino, and learn about the renewal process so you can renew your certification and maintain your designation as a National Board Certified Teacher! Joan is recognized across our state and nation as an outstanding workshop facilitator and one who brings her personal experience, energy, and professionalism to every session.Day 1, June 19, 2008, 9:00am-1:30pm - On the first day participants will focus on the renewal format, revised standards, the renewal product, critical decisions that renewal candidates need to make, and choosing the Professional Growth Experiences (PGE).
Day 2, August 13, 2008, 9:00am-noon - On the second day participants will focus on reading components, reviewing a video, and discussing questions.Remember that National Board Certification takes you "beyond the walls" so you can continue to improve as a teacher as well as share your teaching excellence as mentors, instructional leaders, staff-training experts and other leaders within your school and beyond. Take advantage of this opportunity to become informed about the renewal process and to network with other teachers from across the state.

June 18, 2008 and August 13, 2008: Grantwriting 101 for K-12 Educators
Participants will learn about grantwriting and the steps to producing a grant for submission during the 2008-09 academic year through two (2) hands-on sessions.
Session A, June 18, 2008, 9:00am-noon - information on grants available for K-12 schools and grantwriting tips will be presented; participants will examine resources, collaborate with others, and begin writing an actual grant.
Session B, August 13, 2008, 9:00am-noon - participants from Session A will come together to share their grant in progress, collaborate on grantwriting, and spend time finalizing grants for submission during the 2008-09 academic year.Grantwriting Workshop Flyer (PDF)

June 23-27, 2008: UNCG School of Education Summer Symposium on Future Ready Schools
The focus of this year’s symposium is to encourage and facilitate leadership and collaborative practice among teachers, mentors and administrators by showcasing the reforms in the new 21st century teaching standards and the role that universities can play in implementing these reforms. The audience will include principals, other school administrators, mentors, cooperating teachers, other teachers and school personnel, community members and teacher education faculty from across campus.
Keynote speakers will include:The remainder of the Symposium will be devoted to workshops about strategies and methodologies that will support participants in effectively implementing the new standards. Faculty and outside speakers will lead these sessions. Participants will be able to choose from a number of registration options, such as one day only, two days, or the full week. Workshops will include a special strand for school administrators, Critical Friends Group training, advanced mentoring skills, and a special strand on working with English language learners.

July 28, 2008: AAPT/PTRA 2008 Summer Institute
This one week summer institute is open to any teacher of physical science or physics (middle or high school) who would like to improve his/her teaching skills and knowledge of basic physics (and possibly earn CEU credit at the same time). There is no cost to participants. To secure registration, a 100% refundable check for $75 will need to be written to AAPT. At the conclusion of the insititute, the check will be returned to you. Teachers from Guilford, Robeson, and Forsyth counties have priority until April 28, 2008. Other North Carolina teachers accepted on a first-come basis.

UBEATS Project & BioMusic Fellows
The UNCG School of Music looking for adventurous and creative Elementary Music Teachers located in central NC to participate in a new project, UBEATS, newly funded by the National Science Foundation, and led by UNCG's Music Research Institute with NC State University's Kenan Fellows Program.
