Answers to Your Questions

Are there any scholarships specifically for the School of Education?
The best place to learn about all our scholarship opportunities is through the UNCG Financial Aid Office. Follow the link below to scholarships specific to the School of Education but also look under the sidebar menu on that page for all SCHOLARSHIPS AND PROGRAMS. http://fia.uncg.edu/scholarships/education.htm

What are the requirements / application deadlines / minimum SAT or ACT scores to enroll at UNCG?
The admission requirements are the same for in-state and out-of-state students. To review this information and other requirements for admission, go to http://web.uncg.edu/adm/freshman/

The initial deadline is March 1. Of course, applicants who send in their applications by November 1 will be notified by December 15. All applications submitted after November 1 and before March 1 will be considered on a rolling basis.

For freshman applicants, UNCG does not have a minimum GPA or minimum test score required for admission. However, in our most recent freshman class, the average student's GPA was 3.5 (weighted) on a 4.0 scale; the average SAT score was 1044 (math and critical reading sections only); and the average ACT score was 23. Incoming freshmen must also submit scores from writing section of either the SAT or ACT. (Posted Jan. 2008)

In-state and out-of-state applicants must meet the following minimum high school course requirements:
  • English: 4 years (emphasis on grammar, composition, and literature)
  • Math: 4 years* (including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and one unit beyond Algebra II* )
  • Science: 3 years (including at least one year in life or biological science, at least one year in Physical Science, and at least one laboratory course)
  • Social Science: 2 years (must include one year of U.S. History)
  • Foreign Language: 2 years of the same language
*The fourth unit of math is required for students who graduate from high school in 2006 and beyond.

What majors are offered in the School of Education?

I want to teach Physical Education in high school. Does the School of Education have a program for that?
UNCG has programs for secondary subject-area licensure including Biology, Chemistry, English, Latin, Math, Physics, and Social Studies. Physical Education licensure is a part of our K-12 licensure programs and is under our Department of Exercise and Sports Science. Here is a link so you can explore that undergraduate program further: http://www.uncg.edu/ess/esspedagogy.html#k12.

I am interested in teaching art at the elementary level. Should I pursue a major in Art or should I take Elementary Education with an Art concentration?
If you are interested in teaching art, then you will be an art education major. You will actually receive a degree in art which includes the necessary course work to earn licensure or certification to teach art k-12. (The certification for art is for K-12 and not only elementary.) If you major in elementary education, then you will earn certification to teach grades K-6. You could choose art as a concentration as an elementary major. However, that will not fulfill the licensure requirements you need to be an art teacher. In short, in order to be an elementary art teacher, you should be an art education major.

How do I apply for a Teaching Fellows scholarship at UNCG?
You certainly should apply for the NC Teaching Fellows Scholarship. It is a great opportunity. Be sure to connect with your school counselor when you return to high school in the fall so you can begin to work on your application. She/he will have that information. To learn more about the program at UNCG, go to this website: http://www.uncg.edu/soe/newsite/teaching_fellows/index.html.

I'd like to be able to teach Spanish and English as a Second Language. Can you point me in the right direction?
Teaching licensure in Spanish is a part of our Department of Romance Languages. Here is their website: http://www.uncg.edu/rom/spanish/programs.html. Look for the section that says, "Spanish with Teacher Licensure." This license will allow you to teach Spanish grades K - 12.

As for questions regarding teaching English as a Second Language, please contact Dr. Ye He. Her email address is y_he@uncg.edu and her phone number is 336.334.3452.

I have applied to be a Teaching Fellow but I'm also interested in the International Honors College. Does the International Honors College cost any more than regular admissions to UNCG?
There is no extra tuition cost related to participating in the International Honors College. Teaching Fellows have to complete the application for the Honors College to be considered. Contact the coordinator of the Lloyd International Honors College to answer other specific questions you may have. Go to this website for more information: http://www.uncg.edu/hss/.

I have a bachelors degree and am working full time. I would like to get licensure in Elementary Education but without quitting my job and having to go to school full time. Do you have a program that caters to this need?
Contact these persons should you wish to pursue full-time coursework at UNCG:
1) a second undergraduate degree (about two years full-time) - contact Janelle Rouse, jerouse2@uncg.edu
2) a masters degree (about 17 months full-time) - contact Dr. Barbara Levin, bblevin@uncg.edu
Information at: http://www.uncg.edu/cui/master_programs/index.html

To accomodate your need to continue working while going to school you should contact other area institutions. NC A & T has a new on-line program for K-6 and others (High Point University, Salem College and Greensboro College) have part-time programs.

I have taken previous coursework and will have 26 hours after this semester. I will probably go to a community college for a semester to work on some general college requirements. Can you send me a list of what courses I will need? If I apply now, will I be considered as a transfer student or freshman?
With 26 hours of transfer coursework, you will need to apply as a freshman-transfer. Specific admissions questions should be directed to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

In order to assist you with what courses you need to take, provide Janelle Rouse, Assistant Director and Transfer Advisor for the School of Education Advising Center, with an unofficial transcript or list of courses you have taken thus far. Her e-mail is jerouse2@uncg.edu.
