Admissions

Admission to Deaf, Elementary, Middle Grades, Special Education, and Elementary / Special Education Dual Major


Note: Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to Teacher Education with a major in the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education or in the Department of Specialized Education Services.


The following requirements must be met before admission to Teacher Education:

  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 at UNCG
  • Completion of at least 12 semester hours at UNCG
  • A grade of C or better in TED 250 (Elementary/Middle Grades Ed.) OR SES 250 (Special/Deaf Education). Dual majors may take TED 250 or SES 250.
  • Completion of all courses needed to fulfill the " General Education Core" (GEC) requirements
  • Achievement of minimum score requirements as set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on the Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST), SAT or ACT.

Applications to deaf, elementary, middle grades and special education are reviewed once per year for admission to professional education courses. The education courses begin in the fall and continue for four consecutive semesters, the fourth semester is student teaching.

ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION FOR MAJORS WITH SECONDARY TEACHER LICENSURE

The following requirements must be met for admission to Teacher Education:

  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.50 (or higher depending on major):
    • Comprehensive Social Studies: 2.75
    • English: 2.75
    • French (K-12): 2.75
    • Spanish (K-12): 2.75;
  • Minimum major GPA (if required):
    • Biology: 2.50
    • Comprehensive Social Studies: 2.75
    • English: 2.75
    • French (K-12): 2.75
    • Integrated Science: 2.50 in science courses
    • Latin: 3.00 in LAT courses
    • Mathematics: 2.50
    • Physics: 2.00 in PHY and MAT courses
    • Spanish (K-12): 2.75;
  • Satisfactory progress toward completion of all courses needed to fulfill the “General Education Core requirements;”
  • Release for background check (order form submitted to the Office of Student Servicesprior to beginning first internship);
  • Recommendation of major school/department (obtained by the Teachers Academy office after submission of application);
  • Achievement of minimum score requirements as set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on PRAXIS I (PRAXIS I tests are waived for second degree students and may be waived if SAT/ACT scores are acceptable. See chart below.).
  • Submission of updated degree evaluation (from UNCGenie), copy of test scores, release for background check; and Application for Admission to Undergraduate Teacher Education to 136 SOE Building(http://www.uncg.edu/ted/documents/TeachersAcademyUG_Application12_03_08.pdf).
