The UNCG Teaching Fellows sponsored "Caring for Katrina's Kids" a service project that assisted Harper McCaughan, a K-5 elementary school in Long Beach, Mississippi. This school was virtually destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and the Teaching Fellows wanted to help. The Teaching Fellows adopted the school through the National Education Association's "Adopt-a-School" program.
The UNCG Teaching Fellows are outstanding students from across the state of North Carolina who receive a $26,000 scholarship to UNCG. They agree to pursue a bachelor's degree leading to teacher licensure in the state and teach in North Carolina's public schools for a minimum of four years. As future teachers, they are committed to education and wanted to use their time and talents to assist in this very specific way. Chancellor Patricia Sullivan endorsed our efforts to raise money during the month of October 2005 to aid Harper McCaughan Elementary School.
