When the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission developed the rules and regulations governing the Teaching Fellows Program, the academic requirements were considered at length. The Commission felt that for the caliber of students selected as Teaching Fellows, the expectations must be high, but reasonable. Because Fellows are expected to participate in seminars and other designated campus activities, as part of their Program commitment, the Commission set a minimum cumulative 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) at the end of the Fellow's first semester of the freshmen year, a minimum cumulative 2.25 GPA at the end of the freshman year, and a minimum cumulative 2.50 GPA at the end of the sophomore year, including course work in his/her teaching field and each semester thereafter. Fellows must also maintain appropriate credit hours by the end of the freshmen year and each semester thereafter and be admitted into Teacher Education by his/her junior year. Fellows must also be enrolled as full-time students, as defined by the institution they are attending, and maintain satisfactory progress toward graduation with eligibility for license to teach.
Campus Directors plan programs and seminars designed to assist students with adjustment and transition, study skills, time and money management, and to provide information about counseling services. Campus Directors also practice an open door policy and are available to discuss concerns of Teaching Fellows.
The Commission has held firm to its decision to set and uphold academic standards for the Fellows Program. Although the Commission recognizes that personal and family situations may, from time to time, affect the academic achievement of students, it also believes that students are provided the support and guidance needed to deal with such problems. Students are encouraged to seek help when a problem arises and not wait until the end of a semester, when it may be too late. Although Campus Directors monitor student performance, frequently the extent of academic problems is not clear until the end of a semester. Parents/sureties (co-signers) will be notified when the scholarship is in jeopardy because of low academic performance.
The Commission stresses the priority of the Grade Point Average (GPA) and Credit Hour requirements and their impact upon the security of the scholarship. Scholarship funds are released each semester after grade reports have been received from all the campuses according to the following criteria and only if the requirements for GPA and credit hours have been met:

Fellows are expected to complete their undergraduate work in four academic years (exception noted above) and must plan carefully to make this expectation a reality. Fellows should plan their course work for the fall and spring semesters, leaving summers free for Fellows' required summer experiences.
