Vocabulary and reading comprehension are linked. Building students’ vocabulary allows students to increase word consciousness. Word consciousness is when people develop the ability to recognize words that they don’t know, to recognize words that they have recently learned, and to recognize when a word has multiple definitions. To teach vocabulary with reading comprehension, a focus is put on teaching words that are related to each other and words that are important (Hoyt, 2005).
