Dana Banker, Financial Aid Due to staff vacancies for maternity leave during the busiest time of the year for the Financial Aid Office, many staff members assumed additional and new duties to help keep the office running smoothly. Dana came to work in our area and it was as if she had been there for years and years. It was a seamless transition. Not only did Dana keep the area afloat with her work, but she added value by making suggestions for some changes and helping us to implement said changes. At the same time as working in our area of the office, she still helped to cover the front desk for walk-in traffic and the phone for calls from frantic students and parents. Dana did this all with a smile on her face! Thanks Dana! View a photo of Dana receiving her staff star.
Sarah Cottrell, Facilities Services Alumni House Sarah has shown dynamite customer service, and all-around helpfulness to University guests and staff members, as evidenced by the following commendations sent to Julie Landen, Alumni House Coordinator: "Julie, I wanted to send a quick email--- everything was absolutely amazing last night. Our party at the alumni house surpassed all of our expectations!! Sarah was fantastic, too! We couldn't have done it without her!!! (Elizabeth Talley, Wedding Reception 10/03/09) "Julie, thank you so much for your help in planning our event. Sarah was great and made it so easy for our event to take place and run smoothly in the house. We look forward to working with both of you again soon." (Lynn, UNCG Employee) View a photo of Sarah receiving her staff star.
| Rick Dunning, POCAM / Parking Services Rick coordinates UNCG's Motorist Assistance Patrol program. One day in September he encountered a woman and her infant needing help because their car keys had been lost. Rick offered the use of his cell phone and invited them into the parking office to stay warm and dry (it was raining outside) while they waited for another key. Today the office received a thank you note from the woman expressing her appreciation and gratitude for his kindness, and for the assistance she received from several other parking personnel. | Deb Hurley, Registrar’s Office When Deb Hurley found out the School of Nursing could no longer sponsor the University-wide blood drive held four times a year, she got to work right away forming a partnership with the Office of Leadership and Service Learning. Because of her years of experience on this campus, she was able to secure the support of the Barnes and Nobles Campus Bookstore to cover the room rental and canteen costs. She enlisted the assistance of a fellow co-worker, Libby Sexton, and together they shopped for the snacks needed for the canteen, but it was Deb who initially footed the bill to make sure everything ran smoothly. She asked for volunteers from the Enrollment Services Division and set up the schedule, filling in where needed if a volunteer was not available. She was very committed to this cause and even gave blood herself! She is a very caring individual who wanted a long standing tradition to continue and should be commended for her efforts. Without her help, we would no longer have a blood drive at UNCG. Thanks Deb! View a photo of Deb receiving her staff star. |
Gina Ingraham, Financial Aid I work in the Dean's Office in the Bryan school but I have the pleasure of working with Gina Ingraham in Financial Aid every year from March through October on Bryan School Scholarships. During those months, I am in constant contact with Gina either via phone or email. I cannot tell you the number of emails that I bombard her with on a daily basis at times as I ask her assistance on a variety of things regarding students. I'm sure I average sending her about 10-15 emails a day sometimes and I must drive her absolutely crazy. Gina always answers my emails (and phone calls) so quickly, cheerfully, and courteously. Even when I know she is probably swamped during her own busy time of year, she never fails to answer my questions or research information that I need. UNCG is so fortunate to have an employee like Gina that truly exemplifies what a team player and model employee is all about. Thank you Gina for all you do to assist the Bryan School, our students, and myself. View a photo of Gina receiving her staff star.
Julie Landen, University Advancement Julie has been an absolute pleasure to work with since she assumed her new position as Alumni House Coordinator. She has worked with me tirelessly & smilingly to ensure the Virginia Dare room is properly setup for our Staff Senate meetings. If mistakes are made, Julie quickly takes it upon herself to make corrections without throwing anyone under the bus. I have never caught Julie in a moment when she wasn't cheerful and helpful, and probably never will! Her perpetual joy is an amazing feat considering the high-profile and pressurized events that are commonly held in the Alumni House. Julie has stepped into her role with grace, and I''m happy that I have the opportunity to see her regularly. Thanks, Julie! View a photo of Julie receiving her staff star.
Maria Lopez, Facility Operations Gatewood Building I would like to nominate Maria Lopez to receive a Staff Star award. Maria is a housekeeper for the Gatewood Studio Arts Building ( third floor). This has got to be one of the messiest locations on campus, with all the artistic clutter from our Architecture students. In addition to keeping up with this large area, Maria went out of her way to secure all of the electrical covers that were being kicked loose from the floor of that area. At the end of the school year, she worked with Perez to clean out and fix all the outlets, replacing the covers. This was an important safety measure for our students, and saved us from purchasing new covers. She was proactive and thoughtful in doing this service! Kate Pike/ IAR View a photo of Maria receiving her staff star.
Genero Perez, Facility Operations Perez is the best housekeeper we have ever had. Anytime there is a special event (Advisory Board meeting, Sustainability meeting, etc) in 401 Gatewood, he will clean the room spotless and help move 50 chairs and many tables to set up the room for our guests. He is always willing to help our department in special needs like the major cleanup of our student studio areas at the end of the year. A huge job over and above their daily housekeeping. He deserves a staff star. View a photo of Genero receiving his staff star.
Preston Yarborough, OLSL Preston is always going out of his way for students. Although he spends much of his time behind the scenes, Preston is a chief advocate of the student body and is continually working to make sure that every student has an opportunity to succeed. I have had the privilege of working with Preston on many occasions and in several capacities. As a professor, mentor, leadership trainer, and administrator, Preston is the epitome of sound leadership and compassion. While working on his doctorate, Preston placed the needs of his own aside to make sure that his work remain dedicated to students first and foremost. It is through the work of Preston, and leaders like him, that UNCG remain a great university to attend. It is an honor to recommend him. View a photo of Preston receiving his staff star.
Allyn Cabral, Parking Operations and Campus Access Management Allyn is a recent hire and his primary responsibility is to drive the daytime Spartan Chariot route. In the few weeks he has been employed on campus, he has stood out as one of our finest drivers. All our drivers are good, but Allyn is exceptional! He is uncommonly courteous, professional, and caring towards his passengers. He arrives to work early each day, follows the route as planned, and stays on schedule with ease. And his daily reports (passenger count sheets and mileage logs) are very neat and easy to read, and always turned in on time. A colleague rode Allyn's bus earlier this week and told me how helpful he was to students, answering their questions and sharing information with them. He is a model bus driver and UNCG is quite fortunate to have him! View a photo of Allyn receiving his staff star.
Dean Perdue, Facilities Operations Dean was leaving Mossman building and saw a blind student having difficulty, going in circles with her cane. He stopped his truck and helped her to the corner so she could get find her way.Several students passed by but did not offer to help. This was witnessed by a couple of employees in Mossman who feel he certainly deserves a star.
Lisa Janvari-Cox, Romance Languages The first week of class is always an extremely hectic time for staff, especially those in the departments. Lisa went above and beyond to assist several faculty members with some classroom difficulties. The campus is packed for the fall semesters and to make changes in a classroom assignment is almost impossible. Lisa was able to make things work for her faculty. Thanks Lisa for all you do. View a photo of Lisa receiving her staff star.
Ralph Farmer, Facility Services Housekeeping When the topic of Staff Stars came up at a recent staff meeting, it was unanimous that Ralph be chosen to receive this award. He is without question kind, helpful, and considerate not only to the entire Weatherspoon staff, but to all who utilize the museum. Even more inspiring is his positive attitude and ever willing desire to help, whether it’s an early morning floor washing or a late night special event. View a photo of Ralph receiving his staff star.
Gwenne Causey, Human Resources I have been a participant in many of the classes sponsored by HR and since coming onboard, Gwenne has always been very good about coordinating class registrations and schedule changes. She is very pleasant to work with and seems to have a commitment to doing things "right". I look forward to our continuing working relationship. View a photo of Gwenne receiving her staff star.
James Eagle, Information Technology Services "And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two." (Matthew 5:41) I thought the above line very fitting to describe James'' amazing actions on Thursday, 9/9. I had to get a bulky and somewhat heavy LCD projector and screen from Forney to the Weil-Winfield Residence Hall for a Staff Senate meeting -- while wearing a suit and tie. Not wanting to get wrinkled or sweaty, I asked James if I could borrow a golf cart from his unit's fleet of motorized vehicles. James told me that the screen would not fit in the golf cart, but that I could take one of his vans. Before I could agree to taking a van, James volunteered to drive me to Weil-Winfield, and carried the projector to the van for me. View a photo of James receiving his staff star.
Jonathan Britton, Graduate School Jonathan has been superlative at renovating the Staff Senate site. He has completely reconfigured what was there, and made it more appealing and functional. When I have made requests for changes, Jonathan has always gotten the job done on time while making it look good. His easy-going personality and attention to detail make him a great webmaster for the Senate, and an excellent member of our Communications team. Thanks, Jonathan, for a job well done! View a photo of Jonathan receiving his staff star.
Debbie Biles, Chemistry & Biochemistry I would like to nominate Debra "Debbie" Biles, for a Staff Star. Debbie is the Business Officer, & my co-worker in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department. She and I started in this department at the same time, and Debbie has definitely proven to be a star employee. If we were talking in terms of Gems: She''d be a diamond. Not only does Debbie go the extra mile she goes in gladness. She enjoys the fact that she can lighten another persons work load, by extending her helping hand. She strives for Excellence and she is one of many that contribute to the flow and function of the Chemistry & Biochemistry department, keeping it running as a well oiled machine. Her entire focus is how she can contribute, in making the department run smoother & lighten the load of those around her. Her duties include that of: Administrative Assistant to the Department head of Chemistry & Biochemistry, managing the daily operation of the office, which entails a list of duties, but the main task is maintaining the budget for the department. Thank You for considering her a staff-star! View a photo of Debbie receiving her staff star.
John Pope, Facilities Design & Construction For nearly three hours on Wednesday, August 5th, John accompanied me as we toured the entire campus in 90-degree heat. Our goal was to find the optimal locations for ITS wireless signs that will debut in a few weeks. I want to laud John for his professionalism, friendliness, insight, advice, and general assistance throughout the whole process. Though our meeting was scheduled to be in the air-conditioned Gray House, it quickly turned into a sweat-fest as we walked from location to location. John graciously put his other work and projects on hold so that I could meet a new deadline that had been created for me. Additionally, John submitted drawings for a new sign design to a vendor I had been working with, which helped me get quotes back sooner. John has been at UNCG for 12 years, and showcases the pride and helpfulness that UNCG staff members bring to work each day. He is to be commended for his service to FDC, ITS, and UNCG in general. Kudos, John! View a photo of John receiving his staff star.
Gretchen Pugh, Career Services Gretchen has been a big supporter of Staff Senate. She willingly gives of her time and talent by taking pictures at our events. I've never heard her complain or gripe about it, and she always does a stellar job. I appreciate Gretchen''s teamwork attitude, and am thankful for the way she has pitched in to assist Staff Senate! View a photo of Gretchen receiving her staff star.
Arlene Westmoreland, Business Affairs/Facilities Operations Arlene works hard supporting the work of the Maintenance Technicians in Facilities Operations by dispatching calls, processing work request and recently working to improve their customer service skills through increased training and monitoring of this job function. I think her role in our success isn't fully appreciated. View a photo of Arlene receiving her staff star.
Lisa Dolan-O'Brien, Business & Economics Student Services On April 6, 2009 two employees from the Bryan School Undergraduate Student Services offices, Philip Simpson and Lisa Dolan-O'Brien, assisted a student who was having a medical emergency in the classroom across the hall from their office. Lisa was on the phone with 911 giving Philip directions as he administered CPR until the emergency medical personnel arrived. But it did not end there. Both of these employees went to the hospital later that day to check on the student. They gathered information about what occurred for hospital medical personnel, as well as the student's family. Philip and Lisa continued to check on the student while he was recuperating. Following his release from the hospital, the student and his family came to the Bryan School to thank Philip and Lisa. The kindness and caring that was extended to this family during this difficult time, is a great example of what "Staff Stars" is all about. Thank you Philip and Lisa for representing the Bryan School and UNCG in such a positive way.

Keith Ward, Information Technology Services Keith came to the rescue today. When a student accidentally deleted several network folders losing several years worth of work, data, forms and annual report information we were all in a panic. Luckily Keith found the backup files and restored all the work. Words cannot express just how grateful we are that he came to our rescue.

Mary Swantek - Alumni Affairs Mary went over and above what was expected to ensure that the combined School of Nursing Annual Alumni Association and Gamma Zeta Meeting was an outstanding success. She was tireless in her support of the Presidents of the Alumni Association and Gamma Zeta Chapter. A big thank you for everything that she provided both at the event and the preparation over many weeks before. We acknowledge her for being extraordinary in face of Reunion Weekend beginning the following morning. Mary is always such a pleasure to work with. View a photo of Mary receiving her Staff Star.
Suzanne Williams - Parking Services Suzanne has been extremely helpful in answering questions and concerns I have sent her way on several occasions regarding parking and riding The Heat Bus. Recently I was waiting for the arrival of The Heat Bus at the Becher-Weaver Lot. Suzanne was driving by in her car, saw me, and kindly stopped to offer me a ride into campus, saving me a great deal of time. Later that day I realized that I could not find my Heat Bus card, so just assumed I had either lost it or misplaced it somewhere along the way. Suzanne thoughtfully went the extra mile; she had found my card in her car, and hand-delivered it to my office not knowing for sure if it was even mine. I was so surprised she had found it and so pleased she had taken the time out of her busy schedule to personally return it to me. She is consistently kind, courteous, knowledgeable, and a very professional asset to Parking Services and the UNCG community on many levels. View a photo of Suzanne receiving her Staff Star.
Moreland Smith - ITS Moreland is a star on many levels -- best Banner trainer of all time (his job many years ago)... awesome project manager... dedicated family man... poet warrior. He is a true renaissance man. Most recently he shined brightly as the organizer of Chancellor Brady's installation processional. Despite the weather, he and his team expertly and cheerfully assembled hundreds of people to march. Soaking wet from head to toe, he paced calmly up and down the line checking to make sure all were in place. It was truly a grand processional due in large measure to Moreland's tireless efforts. Remembering Moreland's fondness for Haiku, I offer this simple verse in his honor: The rain soaked wrangler Gave processional advice: Bring umbrellas now! View a photo of Moreland receiving his Staff Star.
Rhonda Strader - Facilities Operations When Rhonda found out I wanted to utilize her map files as the foundation for a new and improved campus parking map, she energetically and enthusiastically offered to help. She trained and supervised a student worker to make some of the changes and personally handled the rest. She even took the time to teach me a little about GIS (Geographic Information Systems). My head spins thinking about all the ways UNCG could benefit from her GIS expertise. Her technical skills and knowledge are truly amazing. Even more impressive though is her personal dedication and collegial spirit. Through several rounds of revisions, Rhonda was always cheerful and professional. She is very easy to work with, has a great sense of humor, and a delightful personality. UNCG is quite fortunate to have Rhonda amongst our staff, and I look forward to future project collaborations working with her. View a photo of Rhonda receiving her Staff Star.
Tami Rich - Parking Operations & Campus Access Management Tami represented our department at coordination meetings in preparation for Chancellor Brady's installation. She did a phenomenal job leading the POCAM team, and her personal dedication to the event was remarkable. Though she was recovering from bronchitis, Tami still came in early to oversee the details for parking, signage and shuttle service. Kudos Tami for a job very well done! View a photo of Tami receiving her Staff Star.
Kent Hawkins - Parking Operations and Campus Access Management On April 18, 2009 Peggy Griffie was on campus for her Class of 1959 Reunion. She locked her keys and pocketbook in her car and while she was in her meeting Kent took care of contacting the dealership she purchased her car from and had everything worked out by the time she got out of her meeting. He loaned her the money to get a new key made and took care of getting her a ride to and from the dealership. When she returned home she wrote a three page letter to Scott Milman letting him know what an outstanding employee Kent is and how grateful she was for all of his help. I feel that Kent went above and beyond the call of duty and should receive a Staff Star for his efforts in leaving a lasting impression of UNCG for Ms. Griffie. View a photo of Kent receiving his Staff Star.
Mainyoua Yang - Center for New North Carolinians It would be almost impossible to list just one example of Mae being kind and helpful over the past two years as colleagues. She notices when I am feeling overwhelmed and genuinely offers her help. She is a joy to work with. I am grateful to have her as a co-worker. View a photo of Mainyoua receiving her Staff Star.
Sheryl Williamson - Career Services Sheryl has been a dynamite leader, and tireless advocate for recognizing staff in her role as Chair of the Employee Recognition Committee, which is part of the UNCG Staff Senate. Under Sheryl's guidance, the number of Staff Stars awarded to staff has increased more than 150% in the past year alone! Moreover, the excitement surrounding Staff Stars has risen among staff and senators (it is not uncommon for groups of 5+ senators to deliver Stars to a single recipient). Sheryl has designed the process of awarding the Star to be more festive and congratulatory. More than once, recipients have cried tears of joy when learning of their recognition. Though Sheryl has done many commendable things this year, the greatest -in my estimation- has been the way she fought tradition to revamp the Staff Excellence Award Banquet. Sheryl brought many innovations to the process, including: nominees knowing the nominator, winners learning of their award at the banquet, and most impressively, having the Chancellor at hand to announce the winners and take photos with everyone. This year's banquet was well-attended, and well-received. The credit goes to Sheryl and the fabulous team she formed. In closing, Sheryl's disarming personality and attention to details have been a perfect fit for the recognition comittee, and the senate as a whole. I am very excited to nominate her to receive a Staff Star, and am happy to see her hard work and efforts be rewarded through the structure she reformed. View a photo of Sheryl receiving her Staff Star.
Ben Kunka - Office of Waste Reduction & Recycling The entire OWRR department is fantastic -- Jenny, Ben and Rachel are a dynamic team! As the operations supervisor, Ben is especially impressive. Constantly in motion, he and his crew work tirelessly behind the scenes making sure dumpsters and recycling containers are serviced regularly and efficiently. Sadly his efforts go unnoticed, but that is the splendor of his work. Because he is so darn good at what he does, we too often take it for granted. Thank you Ben for your commitment and dedication, your warm friendly smile, your thoughtful consideration of others, and for always responding promptly and graciously when called upon for a special request. You are indeed a Staff Star! View a photo of Ben receiving his Staff Star.
Scott Milman - Parking Services Scott, you have been a wonderful dedicated chair of the staff senate this year. You took full advantage of the embrace given to Staff Senate by Chancellor Brady, and delicately balanced the practical with the political. Through your capable efforts and excellent communication, the UNCG Staff Senate raised its visibility not only on campus, but throughout the system. Your leadership and hard work have made Staff Senate a more influential and purpose driven organization. Thanks, Scott, for all your hard work and devotion! View a photo of Scott receiving his Staff Star.
Joshua Green, Student Affairs - Dean of Students Office We are in not in the Student Affairs division, but a couple of weeks ago, Josh helped move a file cabinet from the warehouse to one of our offices in the Brown Building. This is just one example of how Josh is willing to go Òabove and beyondÓ his official job duties to help anyone on campus. He also has a very positive and cheerful personality! View a photo of Josh receiving his Staff Star.
Ann Tickle, Payroll The Payroll Dept would like to nominate Ann Tickle for a Staff Star. Ann is a very giving person, not only of time, but compassion and dedication to her job. The Payroll Dept appreciates her tremendous help, in dealing with the Students, Faculty and Staff. She is a valued asset to both the Payroll Dept and Accounting Services. The University is lucky to have such a wonderful person as a dedicated employee, and we in the Payroll Dept, consider her a wonderful friend! View a photo of Ann receiving her Staff Star.
Martha Wagner, Student Affairs, Division Office Martha is such a joy to work with. She is always willing to help you with any question you may have about HR Recruitment or Banner HR and if she doesn't know the answer she will find it. Martha has been invaluable the past few months, taking on extra duties and being so patient with me and all of the other Student Affairs Division HR Liaisons. We have all been learning new things together. If anyone deserves a Staff Star, it's Martha. View a photo of Martha receiving her Staff Star.
Michelle Harkleroad, The Graduate School Michelle is a dedicated person. She does what needs to be done, including taking on tasks to help out others when need be. She helps to ensure that the application process is a smooth one for all Graduate applicants. View a photo of Michelle receiving her Staff Star.
Bruce Michaels, Student Affairs I'm not sure if Bruce is eligible for this award or not, but he went well out of his way recently for those of us in the Sociology Department and truly demonstrated a ''student first'' orientation towards our work. Last semester, the Sociology Dept. submitted several student nominations for the Golden Chain Honor Society; however, our nomination packet was inadvertently lost. We did not discover this until just a few days before the induction ceremony. When Bruce was contacted about this, he could have very easily said that ''it was too late'' to do anything about it. However, he went the extra, extra mile...he tracked down the lost nomination packet and adjourned a special meeting of the committee to review the lost nominees. Although we discovered the glitch too late to have our students attend the induction ceremony, Bruce ensured that they received the same thorough review as the other nominees and several of our students were awarded Golden Chain membership. I believe this was an extraordinary example of keeping the students'' interests front and center when it would have been so much easier to sit back and do nothing. View a photo of Bruce receiving his Staff Star.
Jason Morris, Human Resources As a relatively new employee at the university, I have had to rely on the assistance of many persons to help me get established. I had the pleasure of meeting Jason on my first day of employment when he conducted my ÔNew Employee OrientationÕ. Since helping me to get off on the right foot here at the university, Jason has been a real resource and has been available to help with any questions I might have concerning university and state policy and procedure. I am presently taking classes in the ÔEssential Supervisor ProgramÕ and Jason has taught the majority of these classes. Jason is always cheerful and looks for ways to add humor to the training, while making sure to cover all of the material. I have appreciated the way that he engages the class participants in back and forth dialog and allows plenty of time for questions and discussion. Learning to work within the Ôstate systemÕ has been a real challenge for me after many years in the private sector. There have been days that I have questioned my decision to come to work for the university. JasonÕs encouragement and help have been one of the things that have made me decide to stay and stick it out here. I feel that Jason and I are partners in trying to make the university a better place to be employed.
Karen Haywood, Registrar's Office Karen is one of the major behind the scenes folks on the campus. She is the driving force behind the success of the University's two commencements. She is also responsible for the accuracy and publication of the academic catalogues, registration guides, Registrar's website, campus directory, and other campus publications. I am always saddened by the fact that at the end of each commencement ceremony, thanks are given to faculty and departments for their devotion to the students graduating. But never is a word of gratitude spoken for the folks responsible for being sure the ceremony is the best possible experience for one of the most important days of the students' lives. I recommend Karen Haywood for a staff star. Thank you.
Karen Christensen, Accounting Services Karen possesses the rare quality of accuracy and accountability. Not only does she catch mistakes made by those of us who submit the endless stream of Banfin 32s across her desk, but she corrects them with politeness, courtesy and a gentle firmness. Karen is an asset to her department and to the university. Although everyone makes mistakes, Karen manages to correct the mistake, with the help of the client, and provides excellent customer service. She should be the Ôposter childÕ for accuracy and dedication to excellence. Karen is a true staff star! This nomination is long overdue!
Howard Spoon, Parking Services Howard Spoon does an outstanding job as the lead driver and transportation coordinator for UNCG's Park and Ride shuttle service. He also did a fantastic job managing the Spartan Spirit shuttles to and from the Coliseum during the UNCG v. Davidson basketball game February 5th. Howard regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty to put students first. He is a dedicated professional and a wonderful co-worker.
Carmen Dubnik, Telephone Services After many years as a client of UNCG telephone services, I have never encountered an employee with such a dedication to customer service and follow through as Carmen. Not only is she an expert at her job but she delivers prompt, accurate information with a friendly, can-do attitude. Carmen takes pride in her work and is a true professional. Frankly, I donÕt know what we would do without her! She represents the best of UNCG staff and deserves recognition as a UNCG Staff Star! Thanks, Carmen.
Sherri MacCheyne, University Relations Sherri does a great job everyday but she has been tenacious with getting the electronic sign in front of the School of Music building fixed. When I asked her to look into it I thought it would be a relatively simple assignment but a year later the sign is better than ever! She wasnÕt satisfied with the previous vendor, (thatÕs why it was never working), went on to research other vendors, did the justification and shepherd it through the P.O. and purchasing process. Sherri worked with representatives from the School of Music to ensure their needs were met. As a result we have a beautiful, colorful working sign on the corner of W. Market St. IÕve had comments from the School of Music faculty and local residents that it is wonderful to FINALLY have an attractive, working sign on the corner. Sherri is a STAFF STAR!
Jan Albrecht, Information Technology Services Jan Albrecht is an outstanding staff member! As an Administrative Assistant, she handles multiple priorities for Information Technology Services Client Services staff, with professionalism, courtesy, and a can-do attitude. She manages her multiple tasks with a great attitude and an excellent work ethic. It is a pleasure to work with her! The Client Services group within Information Technology Services recently moved into Forney Building, and it took a great deal of coordination between ITS staff, movers, facilities design & construction, the physical plant, lock shop, and other campus groups. Jan performed her designated parts very well, and helped orchestrate a smooth move. For months prior to the move, Jan would communicate with the affected staff to ensure we completed documents, signed for keys, marked old equipment and furniture for surplus, chose offices, labeled boxes to be moved, and understood the various timelines. In closing, Jan is a professional in every sense of the word, and is to be commended for a job well done in assisting a successful move! View a photo of Jan receiving her Staff Star.
Sara Cavenaugh, Information Technology Services The Client Services group within Information Technology Services recently moved into Forney Building, and it took a great deal of coordination between ITS staff, movers, facilities design & construction, the physical plant, lock shop, and other campus groups. Sara worked like a skillful conductor behind the scenes orchestrating a smooth move. Sara was responsible not only for the recent move into Forney, but also the original move out of Forney into McNutt. Each of these moves required a lot of grace, effort, and plain ol' project management skills (which Sara has in generous proportions). As if she had not done enough, Sara is also overseeing the move of different ITS staff into the recently vacated office space in McIver. Sara's job is unending, and extremely taxing. Through it all, however, she keeps her inviting smile, sense of humor, and somehow manages to get her other responsibilities taken of. Sara is a professional in every sense of the word, and is to be commended for a job well done in assisting another successful ITS move! View a photo of Sara receiving her Staff Star.
Herman Trojanowski, Library Hermann, like his co-workers in the library, especially the archives, is a fountain of information. His tours of campus are both ghostly and legendary....I have invited alumni to them and they enjoy them immensely. Hermann is quick to provide information....and extensive information at that. Most recently, an alumnae met a man whose great aunts attended in the 1890s and early 1900s. Hermann combed the archives and found about 4 inches worth of materials - letters this person's great aunts had written, their applications, etc. What a wonderful treasure trove for this gentleman, who has called and is extremely grateful. And Hermann always provides whatever is needed quickly and with a smile. Thank you, Hermann!
Lisa McConnell, Development Lisa is always ready to answer my many questions relating to Banner. She is willing to take time out of her very busy day to walk me through procedures and frequently goes way beyond what is expected. She loves a challenge and will often come back with a more elegant solution than the one she has already given. Lisa brings miles of smiles to whatever she is doing, or to wherever she is. Thank you, Lisa View a photo of Lisa receiving her Staff Star.
Mary Hughes, Systems & Procedures Mary Hughes is really good at teaching about Banner HR EPAFs, answering questions, helping in workshop, and helping staff when workshops are over. She has lots of patience and good humor when Banner is being " Silly Banner ", when the instructions and procedures don't match the software, and when error messages are not really errors, etc. Hooray for Mary ! We love her. View a photo of Mary receiving her Staff Star.
Cameron Wilkin, Student Affairs For his help and patience with setting up the Campus Recreation programs on the virtual server. He is always there to help and will make the trek down from the EUC to the SRC usually at a moments notice when we need his help. He has been great to work with on this project.
Kevin McClain, Student Affairs For taking the time to explain all the University technology in absolute laymans terms so those of us who are techo-challenged can understand how and why things work the way they do. And for taking the time to have those monthly OnClick Student Affairs Tech meetings - they are always helpful and we all learn so much from him.
| Marilyn Robinson, Registrars Office, Records Department Marilyn is one of UNCGs unsung heroines. She comes in and does her work, never waivering from her vast duties of maintaining the records for every student that has ever taken a class at UNCG. Students come and go and Marilyn maintains faultless records. Whenever a student comes to see Marilyn, she is always gracious and does everything she can to help the student understand why a course does or doesn't show up on a transcript or for whatever reason the student comes to see her. There are many folks on this campus who don't make big splashes, but give their all to do their jobs to the best of their ability. I want to recognize Marilyn Robinson for a Staff Star. | Brandi McCullough, Strategic Planning (Office of the Provost) Brandi has done a Herculean job at keeping the Strategic Planning Process moving behind the scenes. Aside from being at the beck and call of Rebecca Adams, the committee''s chair, Brandi is the recipient of hundreds of emails sent by committee members; the printer, copier, and compiler of docs for our meetings; the event planner and room reserver; and all-around backbone of the committee. Brandi is to be commended for her work thus far, and for doing it cheerfully and efficiently. View a photo of Brandi receiving her Staff Star. |
| Jenny Paige, The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling Jenny has worked tirelessly to incorporate not just more sustainability on campus but also a more cooperation between faculty, staff, students and departments at Facilities Operations… With more and more awareness about sustainability at UNCG her talents and time are requested all over campus,… Jenny may be only one person but her work output is that of 10 normal employees, I am constantly amazed at her drive for excellence. | John Tennin, Facilites Services He always does excellent work, greets everyone with a smile, opens doors with a smile and has a positive attitude that surpasses anyone I have encountered on campus. I know it would mean the world to him to be a staff star. Keeps MHRAB in top shape! View a photo of John receiving his Staff Star. |
Annette Cline, School of Education As a new employee, Annette Cline made my transition to campus a smooth one. Annette spent my entire first day and most of my first week on the job showing me around campus and the surrounding area, introducing me to staff throughout the UNCG and School of Education communities, and making sure that I had everything I needed in order to do my job efficiently. It is clear that Annette is an asset to the students, staff, and UNCG, and I appreciate how she went above and beyond to help a new colleague with her transition to UNCG.
