With over 20,000 students, UNC Charlotte is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive institution. The College of Information Technology (COIT) was established in 2000 to respond to North Carolina's growing technology sector. (The city of Charlotte is the second largest financial center in the world, and is located near the second largest concentration of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the world.) The COIT includes Computer Science, Software & Information Systems, and a Division in Bioinformatics (that will be a 3rd department). The emphasis on Bioinformatics research is growing with a newly funded $35 million Bioinformatics Research Center. The demographic makeup of the departments participating in this project are given in Table 3.3.
