University of South Florida (Lakeland)
University of South Florida-Lakeland campus is located in Polk County, the 4th largest in the state. The county lies on the I-4 corridor, approximately 25 miles east of Tampa and 35 miles west of Orlando. The location puts Polk county in the middle of a rapidly developing high tech corridor, which runs from Daytona Beach to Tampa. The IT Department was the first complete and autonomous department ever created off of the main USF campus in Tampa. The department started in the fall of 2002 with four faculty and a handful of students. It has grown rapidly with now over 150+ students and seven faculty members. The department offers a BS in IT and an AS to BSAS transition program. While most CS departments in the university are showing a 30% decline in enrollments, the IT department continually shows a healthy growth. This is likely due to the growth of IT intensive industries currently moving into the I4 corridor - Florida's new "silicon valley."
