About University of South Florida Lakeland
University of South Florida Lakeland campus is located in Polk County, a rapidly developing high tech corridor, which runs from Daytona Beach to Tampa. The IT department was the first to complete and autonomous department ever created off of the main USF campus in Tampa. The department started in the fall of 2002 with four faculty members and a handful of students. It has grown rapidly and now offers a BS in IT and an AS to BSAS transition program. The IT department continually shows healthy growth, likely due to the growth of IT intensive industries currently moving into Florida's new "silicon valley."

Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring
A dynamic plan for the future
MathGenie is a computer program developed to provide a personal
math reader to visually impaired students trying to learn math at the K - 12 levels. Work generated by a teacher for sighted students is
automatically converted for use by MathGenie, requiring no special knowledge from the teacher concerning such issues as a Braille code and
preparation of equations for the visually impaired student.
The STARS Math and Technology Summer camp was a five-day camp where STARS student mentors helped increase the math, writing, and technology
skills of over aged middle school students and to also expose them to local technology careers.
