We are excited about all of the happenings in your program and we want to brag about them! This is our chance to share information about your SLA students, projects, and STARS activities.

The UNC Charlotte STARS Alliance is a dynamic group which has been involved in many exciting projects! This year, their main projects include High School Outreach (HSO), Team Hope, GameCATS, and COOKIES (Computing Outreach and Orientation to promote Knowledge, Internet safety, Equality, and Security). They have participated in the Jay Robinson Career Day, High School Saturday Academy, and installing computers for Habitat for Humanity.

Thank you for all that you are doing to broaden participation in computing and IT!

Installing Computers for Habitat for Humanity

UNC Charlotte’s High School Outreach team visits high schools all over the Charlotte area, spreading excitement and understanding within the field of computing. At each high school, HSO brings a number of prepared presentations and hands-on workshops. The HSO team also encourages students to see that they have what it takes to go to college and begin to map out their future careers. Read more from the SLC!

Look what Team Hope is working on! The Team Hope Leadership Team was awarded a grant from the UNC Charlotte Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund for their proposal: Broadening the Pipeline through Community Service. They are building a hands-on robotics demonstration to show perspective students the exciting technology they can learn at UNC Charlotte. Their goal is that this hands-on robotics demo, conducted by the Team Hope student role models, will result in an increase in favorable attitudes towards computing, among under-represented student groups, leading to future increases in enrollment of under-represented populations from computing-related degree programs. UNC Charlotte STARS GameCATS team uses gaming in order to increase recruitment and retention of computer science students. Outreach focuses on interaction with peers who entered the field with a desire to become game developers. By providing a fun and exciting outreach program, they can also appeal to students who may not think they have an interest in computing. Read more from the SLC!
