African Americans in Research in Computer Science (AARCS)

Dr. Juan Gilbert

Auburn University

The AARCS program seeks to broaden the participation of African-Americans at the tenure track faculty and research scientist level; thereby, creating successful role models for students across the southeast. AARCS will broaden participation of African-Americans in computing using three components: Targeted Presentations, Future Faculty Mentoring, and an annual mini-conference at Auburn University. Although AARCS targets primarily African-American students, it may also be used as an empirical model for other under-represented groups as well as for larger projects

In 2006, Dr. Juan Gilbert, an Auburn University Computer Science and Software Engineering Faculty Member, received a National Science Foundation grant for this project. This grant was one of the first of its kind awarded by the National Science Foundation in a new category called Broadening Participation in Computing.

Dr. Gilbert is currently serving on the Alliance evaluation team. The AARCS Project is well suited for integration into The STARS Alliance.
