What is Strong College?

"The benefits of a university education cannot be thought to consist merely in the acquirement of knowledge, but in the opportunities of society and of forming friends; in short, the experience of life gained by it and the consequent improvement of character."
-Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893). Master of Balliol College, Oxford

Cornelia Strong College is one of three Living-Learning Communities at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The program, similar to residential colleges on other campuses, was founded in 1994 by a group of interested faculty members and is named for Cornelia Strong, professor of mathematics and astronomy at the University from 1905 to 1948. Strong College is modeled on the Harvard University Houses, which are themselves copies of the older colleges of Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England (which began in the Middle Ages). The Harvard Houses were established in the 1930's in response to a decline in the quality of student life, very much the situation many large public universities are facing today.

Strong College is not just a place for students to live; it is also a supportive community in which students are able to grow intellectually, socially and personally. This program is particularly suited to those who are seeking a richer and more rewarding academic experience than they might have in a traditional residence hall.

All undergraduate and graduate students in the University are eligible to apply to the program by submitting an application to the Admissions Committee.

Strong College does not have a special curriculum--its members take the usual complement of courses throughout the University. Instead of requiring students to take specific classes, Strong College offers its members the opportunity to join and contribute to an informal social and academic community of students and faculty within the context of the greater University. It is a place, in the words of a parent, "where people look after each other."

The membership of Strong College includes approximately 90 resident students or “Junior Fellows”, between 20 and 25 faculty or “Senior Fellows”, a Residential College Coordinator (graduate junior faculty member), a flexible number of “Associate Fellows” or non-resident upperclassmen and alumni, as well as several distinguished honorary Fellows.
