National History

On January 15, 1908 on the Campus of Howard University, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle along with 15 other visionary women founded Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., making it the oldest and most eminent Greek-letter organization established in America for and by black college women. The perpetuity of this GREATNESS was secured on January 29, 1913 by a movement for incorporation led by Nellie Quander.

Since her inception, Alpha Kappa Alpha has been dedicated to “service to all mankind” and has grown from one undergraduate chapter to an international association. Alpha Kappa Alpha encompasses over 150,000 ladies of integrity, service, scholarship, and leadership from the United States, the U.S.Virgin Islands, Bahamas, West Africa, Germany, and England.
