Nu Rho History

The Nu Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was the first black greek organization chartered at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Nu Rho chapter was chartered on January 17, 1981 by nine phenomenal women. Since it’s founding, 25 lines have been initiated through Nu Rho.

Nu Rho’s objectives are synonymous with those of the sorority. The chapter pursues its objectives through people-oriented programs designed to serve a large portion of Greensboro’s communities.

Some chapter projects include:

• Food 2 Families
• Tutorial program
• Senior Residence Center programs
• Pennies for Pills

In an effort to maintain a progressive interest in college life, the Nu Rho Chapter creates entertaining programs for the students of UNCG. Some of this year’s programs include:
• “Pyramids & Pearls” –A Formal/Ball with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc- proceeds donated to charity
• “Cotton Club” AKA Style- program devoted to Arts target
• AKAerobics
• Girl Talk
• Date Auction with Delta Sigma Theta- proceeds donated to charity
• Black Dollar Day

Prospective Members:

An undergraduate, to be considered a candidate for membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, must be a woman of high ethical and moral standards, matriculating as a full-time student at the school where the campus chapter is located or matriculating as a full-time student in a school in the community where a city chapter of undergraduate status is located, and must have creditably completed one grading period in school. Undergraduate candidates must have attained the cumulative average of C+ and the semester average of C+ in the semester immediately prior to submitting an application for membership.

Undergraduates desiring to become a candidate for membership must attend the official Rush which will be announced at least two (2) weeks in advance. Flyers will be posted giving the date, location, and time of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Rush activity. Any individual who does not attend the Rush activity is ineligible to be considered for candidacy during this period. The Membership Intake Process only begins when an OFFICIAL Acceptance letter inviting one to membership is received.
