Twelve members of the Baptist Student Union traveled to Tarboro, NC, during their Spring Break to assist in the clean up of damage caused by Hurricane Floyd in September of last year.  Jonathan Parsons, spoke of the purpose behind the disaster relief trip, “To meet the needs of the victims, while also introducing them to their real need--Jesus Christ.”  The team was able to meet, and pray with, the owner of each house.  Baptist Campus Minister, Audrey Womack, described some of the work the UNCG team did, “God allowed the UNCG team the opportunity of renovating four homes in Tarboro and nearby Princeville; some from the crawl space up!”  The group spent the week laying down flooring, hanging drywall, and putting in insulation.  Even though many members had no experience in these areas, they were still able to accomplish a great deal.  Daniel McInnis said, “God’s awesome timing was evident as He placed us where we needed to be when we needed to be there.”  Christa Todd described the unbelief at the destruction still present, “To see it on television you feel pity for the people there; to see it in real life you feel empathy emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.”  A strong desire to continue helping emerged as a result of the trip.  Sarah Shaffer said, “It was great to have a chance to do something useful, and I want to continue to work with the Baptist Men.”  Holli Bogle shared the same thought, “Just to see God working in the lives of the people keeps you wanting to go back and help more.”  Not only did God work in the lives of those living in Tarboro and Princeville, He also ministered to the UNCG students.  Dan Poe said, “God broke me that week.  He showed me that no matter what we go through, He will always be there!”  Mary Hollings said “I would have gotten more rest at home, but I would not have felt as refreshed as I did when we left there.”  The group went down looking to be a blessing to those lives shattered by the wrath of Hurricane Floyd, yet they ended up receiving a far greater blessing as God worked in their own lives that week.  Daniel Poole summed up the week in Tarboro as he said, “Words cannot describe the experience I had on the Spring Break Missions trip.”  Those involved on the mission team will never forget this Spring Break, and would like to thank Stacy Elkins for her efforts in planning the trip.
