Graduate Student Governance at UNCG

1964

The Graduate Student Association established on November 10, 1964. First executive elections held in February 1965. From the Constitution,

Preamble
We, the Graduate Students of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in order to foster a community of scholars, aid in the growth of our university and create a means of student, and student-faculty communications, do establish this constitution of the Graduate Student Association of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

1977

The Graduate School creates a University Graduate Student Council (UGSC), announced in a memo written by Gail Hennis:

This fall we are initiating a University Graduate Student Council which will provide representatives from all academic disciplines a forum for input into decision making processes within the University. We have felt for some time that a large segment of the University Community [sic] was lacking a structure that would enable them to make their wishes known. Hopefully, this Council will help alleviate this need.

1979

The UGSC successfully petitions for representation on the Graduate Administrative Board

c1980

From the UGSC Constitution:

Section 2.1 The UGSC shall recommend graduate student representation for University Committees
Section 2.2 The UGSC shall act in a liaison between graduate students and the administration

1985

By this time the UGSC begins receiving an annual budget from the university with which it funds symposiums, special events, a student newsletter, its internal operations, and student travel.

1993

UGSC disbanded for unknown reasons; a Graduate Student Association is reestablished and assumes the functions of the UGSC.  A new set of governing documents are drafted; the mission and goals can be found here.

2003 By this time the GSA's budget beyond operating expenses is increasingly devoted to student travel.
2008

The GSA's constitution and bylaws are extensively revised, with mission and goals remaining unchanged from 1993. Almost all special events, social activity, and publications have ceased in favor of funding student travel. The group's bylaws now codify support for unicameral student government under the Student Government Association
