UNCG Habitat for Humanity
What is Habitat for Humanity of
Greater Greensboro?
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro is a non-profit,
community-based organization dedicated to building affordable housing for
hard working, low income families. Through its outreach efforts, Habitat
brings together many groups within the community to finance and construct
single family homes. All of the families who qualify to purchase a Habitat
house have previously been living in very crowded or substandard housing.
The Greensboro Habitat affiliate was founded in 1987 and is one of the
75 affiliates located in North Carolina. To date area volunteers with some
help from UNCG students have completed 160 homes and four neighborhoods.
Greensboro Habitat began work on a major new subdivision
in autumn 1996. Poplar Ridge subdivision, off Holt's Chapel Road in Greensboro,
which is now completed and has 67 homes. UNCG Habitat students worked at
Poplar Ridge on the first workday held there in September 1996.
Using no-interest mortgage financing, Habitat homes are
sold to qualified homeowners who have contributed "sweat equity" as part
of their down payment on the purchase of their house. Homeowners make monthly
payments on their mortgages and are responsible for the maintenance and
upkeep of their homes. Habitat staff members and volunteers work with the
families before and after the homes are built as part of a family partnership
program.
