KEY CONCEPTS #3:
Deviance, a sociological concept depicted here by the "lone protestor" of the
Tiananmen Square Massacre, is a recognized violation of cultural norms.
The norm for citizens of most countries is to accept their current political
situation, but that is not the case for this citizen. The student pictured
took part in a pro-democracy protest seeking radical change in
communist China. Deviance has often encouraged social change.
Sociologist, Emile Durkheim, affirmed that "today's deviance can
become tomorrow's morality."
