Ten years of Tones....

History. . .

Where on Earth did they come from?

The Spartones were founded in the Spring of 1997 by Kelly Turner and Dominick Amendum, assisted by Dr. Carroll of the UNCG School of Music. It started as an offshoot of the Men's Glee club so that the members could sing choral literature that ther were interested in singing that they probably wouldn't perform anywhere else. Since then, the Spartones have sung all over the east coast including The White House in 2000 and The College of William and Mary in 2006.

The first studio album released by the group was Casting the First Tone (1999), which was followed by Let the Sunshine In (2000). The third studio album for the group was named Bulletproof (2003), which was followed by a rebuilding period in which no albums were recorded. In May 2008 the Spartones released their extremely successful fourth album entitled Not the Same. Tracks from the last two albums have been put on compilations such as Voices Only and Best of College A Capella.

Kelly Turner (who is now a doctoral student at UNCG in Choral Conducting) was recently asked about how the group had changed throughout the years. He believes that the group has come to a new level of complexity and feeling in arranging a cappela music and is really impressed with the energy, personality, and confidence that the group has on stage. The Spartones are the only all-male a capella group at UNCG and one of three groups total. We actively gig across the east coast, performing at weddings, concerts, receptions, town anniversaries, retirement homes, middle schools, high schools, other universities, and even haunted houses!

The guys who make up the group come from all over campus with majors like English, biology, accounting, acting, happiness, and yes, music. Even though the group comes from such diverse educational background, we all share one thing: the love of singing. In recent years they have begun competing throughout the southeast and even took second place in the semi-finals of ICCA twice (2006, 2008)!
