The UNCG Department of Social Work has a ten year exchange program with the Department of Social Work at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. Every other year, a UNCG faculty member and a group of UNCG social work students go to Glasgow to study with social work students at Jordanhill College. In alternate years, Scottish professors and students come to UNCG for 3 weeks of study.
During the summer of 2000, eleven UNCG students studied at the University of Strathclyde for over three weeks. The program involved an introduction to Scottish history, government, and social services; visitations to a number of social service agencies; and presentations to Scottish students about US social services, including welfare reform and Medicaid. Students lived in an international student dormitory in downtown Glasgow and had the opportunity to meet other students from all over the world. Other cultural opportunities included a trip to Sterling Castle, near the site of one of William Wallace's victories over the British (remember Braveheart?) and a visit to Loch Lomond. Students also had ample time for trips to Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Ireland, and other places as well.
In the past, courses have been offered in the following areas:
Courses are open to rising social work seniors. graduate social work students, and others, with the permission of the instructor. For more information about the exchange program in general, contact Dr. Lindsey at (910) 334-5225 or e-mail Dr. Betsy Lindsey.
