About
the Department
The
Department of Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies (CARS) is
one of the five departments in the School
of Human Environmental Sciences (HES): Interior Architecture,
Human Development and Family Studies, Nutrition, Social Work,
and Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies.
We
believe that the route to excellence is to focus the course
of study under the close supervision of qualified faculty. Faculty
(currently 9, including one adjunct professor); are involved
in the teaching and research components of the department; 7
hold doctoral degrees. There are approximately 160 undergraduate
students with approximately 40% studying textile products design
and 60% textile products marketing. Graduate
students (20 currently) are pursuing their degrees for Master
of Education, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy.
Practical learning experiences complement our academic program.
Our student
internship program prepares students for the real world
and provides the industry with well-trained employees. Students
begin preparation for their internship during their junior year
with a pre-internship course. This course helps them to become
aware of current trends and developments in the industry as
well as prepare professionally. Students learn about specific
industries, prepare for interviews, develop interviewing skills,
and write resumes for their career opportunities. In addition,
students have part-time job
opportunities on or off campus in nearby industries on a
temporary basis while studying. Students have an opportunity
to develop leadership skills through participation in industry
internships.
To
provide guidance and direction of the apparel and retail industries,
the Department has an Advisory
Board made up of 20 members who represent major companies
in the Southeast. The Board provides guidance and suggestions
on equipment and laboratory planning and educational programs.
Each fall the Board sponsors a symposium with nationally known
speakers, and they provide scholarships, equipment funds, and
internships.
CARS
Advisory Board Meeting
In
2003, the Department's Textile Products Design concentration
met the educational competencies and laboratory standards for
approval by the American Apparel and Footwear Association. Only
16 programs nationally are so recognized.
Scholarships
are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled
in the CARS program. Three VF Corporation companies provide
two major scholarships. The Southeastern Apparel Manufacturers
Suppliers (SEAMS) awards two scholarships to design students.
There are other Department, HES School, and Graduate School
scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships awarded annually.
