Nancy J. Miller holds the Burlington Professorship in the Department of Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Miller’s research efforts focus on discovering and measuring factors that affect the rural community marketplace with particular emphasis on small and entrepreneurial businesses, family-owned businesses, women and Latino-owned businesses, and formal networks that build collaboration among independent business owners. Dr. Miller also examines consumer behavior in the small community marketplace with emphases on elderly consumers. She has been an active grant writer generating $1.98M in funding for multi-state, multi-disciplinary research with 12 external grants funded. Her research has been published in 25 different peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Small Business Management, Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, Journal of the Community Development Society, Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal, Family Business Review, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, International Small Business Journal, Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, and Psychology and Marketing.
Dr. Miller has served as Associate Editor for the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal (CTRJ) in the Consumer Behavior and Theory area. She has served as an Editorial Board member or reviewer for the Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of the Global Academy of Marketing Sciences, Journal of Marketing Channels, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, and the Family Business Review. She recently co-edited a special publication for CTRJ concerning Global Marketing Systems and serves as the VP of Publications for the International Textiles and Apparel Association (2009-2012).
Dr. Miller’s research findings are integrated into teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Case studies have been developed for teaching merchandising based on small and large sized apparel retailers. In addition to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she has advised students in developing their theses, dissertations, and undergraduate research projects at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, Iowa State University, and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.
Dr. Miller has presented research findings to a variety of international professional organizations as well as to community and extension audiences. The potential for application of research findings has been a fundamental consideration in developing her program of research. Dr. Miller works to enhance the well-being of families, individuals, and businesses. She is committed to providing useable materials that will be of value to people beyond the academic community.
