The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has been dedicated to the education of future teachers since it opened as the State Normal and Industrial School on October 5, 1892. Today, teacher education is a university-wide priority. Programs are offered by the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Health and Human Performance, the School of Human Environmental Science and the School of Music, Theatre and Dance.
While individual licensure programs remain under the purview of the college and schools, the overall integrity of professional preparation and policies that affect all programs is the responsibility of the Dean of the School of Education. Under the Dean's direction, the Teachers Academy provides a structure that strengthens the university-wide approach to the education of prospective teachers and other school personnel. The Teachers Academy's Council of Program Coordinators and Executive Committee develop and implement policies that are aligned with state and national laws and with best professional practice, oversee the development of professional education programs, and coordinate teacher education programs across campus. The Teachers Academy also provides information to licensure candidates and processes applications for admission to the Teachers Academy (professional education), admission to student teaching/internships, and licensure.
