Initial Licensure

What is the Standard Professional I License?

picture of chalkboardStandard Professional I License is the State of North Carolina's initial license for individuals who qualify to teach in preschool, elementary, middle and secondary schools. To qualify for this license, individuals must:

  • Complete a state approved teacher preparation program from a regionally accredited college or university, or
  • Complete an approved alternative licensure program, hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, and meet the federal requirements for "highly qualified" teachers

All public schools and many private schools in North Carolina require their professional educators to hold this initial level of licensure. If you plan to work outside North Carolina, check with the education department of that state to determine if your North Carolina license will be accepted.

UNCG offers undergraduate, graduate and alternative licensure programs that lead to Standard Professional I licensure. For program information, please read the UNCG Undergraduate Bulletin or Graduate Bulletin or contact the program coordinator in your subject area of interest (see Council of Program Coordinators on this website).

Additional information about Standard Professional I licensure is available at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/licensure/steps/ .
