Applying for Licensure
Applications for Licensure
Before submitting an application for licensure, candidates must meet the requirements of their licensure programs.
- For candidates who are lateral entry teachers, requirements include coursework, one year of successful teaching in their licensure area (as documented by a letter from the principal of the school in which the candidates have taught and scores of 2 or 3 on the Teacher Growth and Assessment for Preservice [TGAP]), acceptable evaluations on the Candidate Dispositions and Assessment Process (CDAP), and other requirements as defined by licensure programs.
North Carolina requires all candidates who hold or have held a lateral entry teaching position to earn passing scores on the Praxis II teaching exams. Information about Praxis II can be found at the ETS website.
- For candidates who have student taught, requirements include coursework, an electronic portfolio that demonstrates the candidates’ meeting the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards, successful internships and student teaching (documented by scores indicating proficiency on the Certification of Teaching Capacity and scores of 2 or 3 on the Teacher Growth and Assessment for Preservice [TGAP]), acceptable evaluations on the Candidate Dispositions and Assessment Process (CDAP), and other requirements as defined by licensure programs.
North Carolina requires elementary and special education candidates who have student taught to earn passing scores on the Praxis II teaching exams. Other programs may require passing Praxis II scores, as well. Information about Praxis II can be found at the ETS website.
Candidates should be aware of and meet the requirements for their licensure programs.
Candidate applications should be downloaded at the Office of Student Services website and returned to the Office of Student Services licensure coordinator.

Applications should be submitted no sooner than two weeks prior to graduation/completion of all requirements.
Processing of licensure applications by the Office of Student Services and State Department of Public Instruction usually takes 6-8 weeks. The processing cannot begin until the candidate has graduated or, in the case of alternative licensure candidates, completed his or her program.
Candidates who do not apply for licensure within one year from program completion and graduation may have additional requirements to meet before they are recommended for licensure.
