Frequently Asked Questions
Production
- Q: If my school or group is interested in booking the North
Carolina Theatre for Young People tour to come to my school, whom do I
contact?
- A: Contact the North Carolina Theatre for Young People
office at 336-334-4015. NCTYP will book the Spring 2010 tour
beginning as early as August 2009.
- Q: What is the age appropriateness of the North Carolina
Theatre for Young People plays?
- A: This question is answered on a play-by-play basis. Many
"TYP" shows are geared for pre-school to sixth graders, while others
are targeted for a middle school audience, etc.
Please contact the NCTYP office at 336-334-4015 if you have specific
concerns about age appropriateness.
- Q: How long are the TYP shows?
- A: At the North Carolina Theatre for Young People, we strive
to have all performances under an hour. However, there are exceptions
to this rule. When we offer a mainstage musical (i.e. The Sound of
Music or Peter Pan) to school groups, we do perform the entire musical,
which can be as long as two and a half hours. Please feel free to
call the TYP office at 336-334-4015 to determine the approximate length
of a specific TYP performance.
- Q: Are auditions for UNCG Theatre Productions open?
- A: Yes, any UNCG student may audition for the plays we
produce as UNCG Theatre and the North Carolina Theatre for Young
People. However, we do hold auditions for the entire Fall semester
plays on the evening of the second day of classes. Auditions for the
entire Spring semester occur in the previous November. This allows
directors, actors, and designers the proper time for research and
development and the potential re-scheduling of conflicts.
- Q: How is the UNCG Theatre season chosen?
- A: The Play Selection Committee meets late fall to mid
winter to develop a season that reflects different styles and periods
of theatre, while considering a myriad of factors including: numbers of
roles, opportunities for student designers, audience potential, budget
requirements and limits, and serving the overall UNCG student body as
well as our Department of Theatre student body. All students,
faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit play titles for
consideration (there are specific forms to be completed). The
committee than evaluates these choices, presents a season
recommendation to the entire faculty, which is subject to approval
and/or adjustments.
- Q: What do I wear to attend the theatre?
- A: As we are on a college campus, we do not follow a specific dress code.
You are welcome to wear blue jeans, shorts, etc.
We recommend business casual attire.
Academic
- Q: May I sit in on theatre classes when I visit the campus?
- A: Yes, we advocate prospective students observing our
professors in their classroom elements. However, please make
arrangements for this opportunity when you call 336-334-4032 to set up
a visit and/or tour of campus.
- Q: Do I have to audition to be accepted as theatre (acting)
student?
- A: Auditions are required for admission to the MFA in Acting
degree program.
For undergraduate degree programs, auditions and interviews/portfolio
reviews for admittance to specialized BFA track degrees (Acting, Design
and Technology, Technical Production, and Theatre Education) occur once
you are enrolled at UNCG and usually occur at the end of the first or
second semester.
