Tom Humphrey

Tom Humphrey began his tenure as Professor and Head of The Department of Theatre at The University of North Carolina Greensboro in January, 2002. Prior to arriving at UNCG, he spent seventeen years as the Artistic Director of The Western Stage, a TCG constituent theater in Salinas, California. Tom holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing from The University of California, San Diego, where he worked under the Tony Award winning director Alan Schneider, master acting teacher Arthur Wagner, and the renowned Shakespearian and character actor Eric Christmas Tom served as founder of and Producing Director for Young People's Theater in Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as Weathervane Playhouse in Central Ohio. In addition, he was Producing Artistic Director for the Center Repertory Company in Walnut Creek, California. Tom has served as visiting faculty at The University of California, Santa Cruz and California State University, Monterey Bay. He was also the Director of Dramatics for Newark High School in Newark, Ohio and served as the Ohio State Director for The International Thespian Society. Tom has directed over 250 plays and musicals in his career, including the acclaimed three-part world premiere adaptation of John Steinbeck's EAST OF EDEN, adapted by UNCG's Alan Cook. Some other directorial favorites have been THE VOICE OF THE PRAIRIE, SWEENEY TODD, JUDEVINE, THE SECRET GARDEN, MEASURE FOR MEASURE (for UNCG in 1993), and the world premiere adaptation of John Steinbeck's CANNERY ROW.
While at UNCG, Tom has directed A PIECE OF MY HEART, WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, and HOME for the Department of Theatre. He was co-adaptor and director for Willa Cather's O PIONEERS!, a workshop production presented in the Spring of 2006. He directed OLD WICKED SONGS for Triad Stage in 2003.
