Faculty (EPA)
• Searches and Hiring
Faculty and certain administrators exempt from the state personnel act.
The first step in authorizing a search for a new EPA faculty member is
to secure authority for the search from the Provost through the Dean
of the unit. ADD TEXT ON AA FORMS AND PROCEDURES, SEARCH PROCESS. After hiring
new EPA faculty, complete a PD7 form to add the new faculty member to
the
payroll system. Additionally, all new personnel (EPA, SPA, students,
temps) are required to go to the Office of Human Resource Services (students
go
to the Student Employment Office) within the first three days of employment
to complete identity verification and employment eligibility forms (Human
Resource Form I-9). EPA employees must also submit to the Office of the
Provost, via the department chair and dean, official transcripts of all
graduate work completed. Failure to verify credentials with the Office
of the Provost within 90 days of the initial employment date will result
in withholding of pay until credentials are submitted.

• Annual merit review
Tenure track faculty members complete Annual Reports
each year. The
Annual Reports report faculty activities under the categories of Teaching,
Research and Creative Activity, and Service. Other reporting areas,
such as Directed Professional Activity, may also be included, depending on
the policies of the department and unit. Annual reports cover an annual
reporting period from April 1 of the prior year through March 31 of the reporting
year, and they are due in departmental offices on or about April 1. The
reporting dates and annual reporting period are historical artifacts of due
dates for reports from the university to the Office of the President of the
UNC system.
Annual reports form the basis for Annual Reviews, which in turn typically provide the basis for salary increases, when available. The North Carolina General Assembly and the UNC Board of Governors (BOG) typically require that salary increases be distributed on the basis of MERIT, as determined by departmental policies and procedures, and as recommended to the Deans by the Department Chairs or Heads of the departments in the respective units. At times, annual merit reviews as a basis for salary increase are supplanted by the General Assembly with alternative forms of salary adjustment such as percentage increases, fixed dollar increases, or one-time bonuses, depending on the budget package passed in any given year.
Annual reports still are due from all faculty members each year, and some form of annual merit review is advisable in order to maintain a continuous record of faculty performance for purposes of promotion, tenure, or post-tenure review. Forms, policies, and procedures are available at the web site below. Unit and departmental policies and procedures can be accessed through the unit web sites.

• Reappointment
• Promotion and Tenure
Procedures
for promotion, tenure, and reappointment typically begin well in advance
of the actual due date for the review, and involve discussions with the
department chair. The chair provides guidance with respect to timelines
for the review and also may help candidates develop a plan for preparing
effective review materials. The chair is responsible for managing the review
process at the department level and for informing the tenured faculty as
to where and when candidate materials can be reviewed. The chair presents
a verbal summary of the candidate's case prior to faculty discussion and
voting at the department and school levels.

• Post Tenure Review
Post tenure review is required of all tenured faculty.
Building on annual reviews, post tenure review is a cumulative evaluation
of faculty in the areas of teaching, research, and service. An additional
category, directed professional activity, may be used if the department
has approved the category of performance. The cumulative review must take
place no less frequently than every five years and is the responsibility
of the department chair, although the review must involve peers. The Provost's
Office maintains a schedule of due dates for UNCG faculty members.

• Part
time, term contract, clinical faculty, and EPA non-faculty
• External Activities for Pay, Dual Employment
A
faculty or other professional staff member who plans to engage in external
professional activity for pay must complete the "Notice of Intent
to Engage in External Professional Activity for Pay" and file this
document with the head of the department. A separate "Notice of Intent" must
be filed for each such activity in which an employee proposes to engage.
The "Notice of Intent" typically is filed not less than ten (10)
calendar days before the date the proposed external professional activity
for pay is to begin. Additional information related to external activities
for pay can be found in the "Personnel" section of the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro Policy Manual located at http://its.uncg.edu/Policy_Manual/.
• Licensure and certification
• Development for Faculty
Professional development for faculty members is the responsibility of each
individual faculty member. However, faculty development is valued and
supported by the university through the Teaching and Learning Center. Units,
departments, programs, and other entities of the university also provide
faculty development opportunities in teaching, research or creative activities,
and service. Support for professional travel is available through the
department budget. Some units offer professional travel supplements,
especially for non-tenured faculty, and the Provost’s Office offers
some supplements. International professional travel can be partially
supported and assisted by the International Programs Office. The web
sites below provide further information and assistance.
