Mission and Goals
The Association’s mission is to support
campus-based faculty development initiatives across the UNC System that
focus on enhancing teaching and learning by:
(1) |
promoting and supporting campus teaching centers in their efforts to insure effective teaching and meaningful, sustained faculty development across the UNC system; |
(2) |
collaborating on professional development initiatives undertaken by campus units, whether initiated in them or in response to those charged with faculty, campus and system governance; |
(3) |
promoting a collaborative, connected approach to faculty professional development at the system level that is manifested at the campus level; and, |
(4) |
providing a mechanism through which inter-institutional teaching and learning issues and concerns may be discussed and begin to be addressed. |
Objectives:
(1) |
To assist campus teaching centers in identifying and addressing shared faculty issues and concerns related to teaching and learning and strengthen their roles in the enterprise. |
(2) |
To provide system-wide opportunities for faculty members and professional staffs of teaching centers to expand their expertise in areas related to the teaching and learning enterprise. |
(3) |
To promote and facilitate joint ventures and collaborative efforts related to instruction for member centers in the UNC system. |
(4) |
To provide a conduit for conversation through which campus centers and administrative bodies, whose actions and programs affect the teaching and learning environments on the campuses, may inform, and be informed by, each other in meaningful ways. |
(5) |
To provide opportunities for inter-campus dialogue about teaching and learning and the exchange of teaching techniques among colleagues from member campuses. |
Sampling of Related Activities:
(1) |
Provide opportunities to share expertise on faculty and instructional development program offerings and strategies, as well as administrative knowledge in areas such as staffing, planning, budget development, and assessment. |
(2) |
Sponsor meetings and provide mechanisms for dialogue that will encourage and maintain sharing relationships among directors of campus teaching centers. |
(3) |
Disseminate information and resources about effective teaching and learning, including links to campus centers and higher education websites, as well as electronic publication of "Effective Teaching", a refereed, on-line journal of the Association. |
(4) |
Coordinate meetings among members of the Association with UNC’s administrative officers, such as the Faculty Assembly, and committees within General Administration, regarding areas of concern and future program offerings. |
(5) |
Promote and subsidize regional workshops with area centers for faculty, staff, administrators on topics of interest, such as the instructional uses of communication technologies, assessing teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes, new faculty programs, cooperative learning and building learning communities. |
