Departmental Academic Programs

Course Scheduling

Courses fall into two broad categories, regular courses and distance learning/extension courses. The schedule for regular courses is submitted to the Office of the Registrar, while distance/extension courses are handled through the Division of Continual Learning.

Course schedules are submitted well in advance of the semester in which courses will be offered. The spring schedule of course offerings is prepared at the start of each academic year, generally by late August or early September. Course schedules for the summer are due shortly thereafter, usually by late September or early October, and schedules for the following fall are due by late January.

Preparation of course schedules includes recommendations for classroom assignments and must be consistent with guidelines provided by the Office of the Registrar. In the case of summer school schedules, each department is given an allocation to cover regular course offerings based on credit hour production from previous years (102 budget). Additional funds for distance/extension offerings also are available through a separate budget (107).

Curriculum (new or revised programs, courses, Curriculum guide)

Curriculum changes (additions, deletions, revisions) are initiated at the department level and proceed through the Unit Curriculum Committee and the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and/or the Graduate Studies Committee, as appropriate. Curriculum changes that affect teacher licensure or other school licensure (e.g., supervision, school administration) must also be approved by the Teachers Academy.

Information on policies and procedures, as well as cover sheets for course or program changes are available in the yellow Curriculum Handbook distributed each year by the Provost’s Office, or on the website listed below.
