Welcome to our website which provides faculty development modules related to effective teaching in an online environment. Each module contains a suggested Brief Hybrid Workshop using short, online media presentations; follow-up resources and references; and feedback from users. The Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education has provided a framework for the development of these resources. Each module features experienced online teachers from the campuses of The University of North Carolina.
Overview
The Brief Hybrid Workshop
Brief Hybrid Workshops (BHWs) are designed to address the professional development crisis of faculty members desiring and needing knowledge/skills related to teaching and learning but lacking the time to participate in traditional faculty development workshops. In contrast to traditional workshops, BHWs are more focused, portable, and require 15 minutes or less to complete.
An important component of a BHW is a well-crafted, Internet-accessible, media presentation lasting 5 minutes or less. Such media presentations can convey information or present instructional challenges and/or solutions effectively and efficiently. Wrapped around the media presentation is an active learning group activity related to the topic. BHWs have the capability of raising awareness of important teaching and learning issues, and quickly engaging faculty to encourage more informed practice.
Recommended strategies for conducting BHWs are available in the BHW Guide. Additional information about the BHW concept is available at the TLT Group website - http://www.tltgroup.org/bhw.htm
