The Creative Services Division provides graphic design and production services for instructional, research, and administrative projects. Types of services provided include:
Except for the videotaping of speakers, there is no labor charge to faculty for producing materials to be used in a UNCG scheduled class. For instructional projects, departments must cover costs of color copies, transparency film, and mounting/lamination materials. Labor charges for non-instructional projects average about one-third of the fee charged by commercial vendors. If your department or grant is paying for any item, please bring an authorized, signed interdepartmental invoice (Banfin 33) and grant number when you come to schedule the work. Call Ruth Katzenstein at 334-5114 if you have any questions concerning costs.
In general, the Creative Services Division asks that you allow two weeks for production of materials. Since work is performed on a first-come-first-served basis, the actual time required will depend on the number of jobs already scheduled. Call Ruth Katzenstein at 334-5114 if you have any questions concerning project scheduling.
The Creative Services Division of the Teaching & Learning Center provides the following photographic services:
35mm slides and digital images from provided books, periodicals, flat art, etc.
Black & white film processing and printing
Studio and location digital and silver based photography
35mm slide duplication in digital or silver based formats

35mm slides from computer files
Instructional Image Scanning
Instructional Projects are defined as those that are initially created for classroom teaching in a regularly scheduled UNCG course (Biology 101, English 202, etc.) These scanning projects are subject to the “Fair Use” provisions of US Copyright Law.
The TLC maintains a faculty lab for the production of electronic media. This Faculty Multimedia Center is a self-service facility for the development of web based and technology based instructional materials. The facility and staff support both Windows and Macintosh platforms. Faculty members who have multiple images to be scanned should contact the staff of the Faculty Multimedia Center (utlc@uncg.edu) for an appointment. The staff will provide faculty members or their assistants with training and equipment to scan slides, negatives, and prints, and to perform simple manipulation of electronic images. In the event that a faculty member has a limited number of images that require more complex manipulations or optimization, Creative Services will complete this task or offer expert instruction to the faculty member. There are charges for CD and DVD media.
Non-Instructional Image Scanning
Non-instructional projects are those that are initially created for all purposes other than classroom instruction.
Creative Services will scan and/or manipulate a limited number of images for non-instructional purposes on a charge basis. These projects are subordinate to the instructional workload and are handled on a case-by-case basis. Non-instructional projects would include, but are not necessarily limited to, scanning of images for departmental web pages, scholarly publications, research projects, displays, conference presentations, poster sessions, materials for promotion and tenure, etc. We recommend that clients contact us at 334-5078 for quotes and time schedules. There are charges for labor time, CD media, and Zip Disks.
Duplication
The TLC can copy videotapes in NTSC (USA standard) and PAL/SECAM (European) formats. Personnel of the TLC will provide these services for instructional purposes within the limits of the copyright laws. The faculty member or department will be responsible for the cost of the tape. The TLC cannot copy an out-of-region DVD to create an in-region-DVD and we cannot copy any "copy protected" DVD. The TLC will create DVDs from digital video materials originally produced by the TLC, and will capture video clips for use in distance learning.
Classroom Taping
The TLC will provide camcorders and tripods to instructors for the taping of class sessions and/or guest speakers for archival or instructional purposes. Tapes may be purchased at the circulation desk. TLC staff will train the instructor or a designated student in the use of camcorders.
Video Production
The TLC has a TV studio with professional lighting, sound, and video equipment. The studio is available for interviews, small panel discussions, dramatic vignettes, etc. The TLC also has field recording capabilities in digital as well as S-VHS format. Field tapes may be combined with studio production in the creation of edited programs. TLC staff provide production engineering and assistance in the scripting and planning of these projects. The videotaping of any campus sponsored event or speaker is subject to production charges.
Audio/Video Editing
The TLC has a non-linear video editing system and video capture equipment for producing video and video clips. Audio editing equipment is also available. The TLC can work with faculty to produce video for inclusion in classroom presentations and for web delivery, and for standard playback. Video and audio can be produced on DVD and CD media. Video and audio format conversion is offered. Please contact Michael Carter at 334-5287 for more information.
It is illegal to copy all or any part of a videotape or to tape programming off-air or off-satellite without the written permission of the holder of the copyright. For off-air and off-satellite taping, the TLC will provide the tape and will control the circulation for preview to ensure strict compliance with the copyright laws. Copyright law allows recording of off-air programs for instructional purposes during broadcast for use once per class during the 10 days following the broadcast date. The tape can be retained in the TLC an additional 35 days for purchase consideration. After a total of 45 days the program must be erased or purchased. For a more detailed explanation of copyright and its application to media production and use, see the copyright discussion at www.ala.org.
Satellite teleconferences can be received by the TLC's satellite receiver and distributed via the campus telecommunications system. Locations capable of receiving broadband communications are limited. Contact Ray Purdom at 334-5108 or utlc@uncg.edu to schedule campus sponsored teleconference activities. There is no charge for UNCG sponsored satellite teleconferences or to North Carolina state agencies. Hourly equipment charges apply to all other groups.
Foreign Language Tapes
Master copies of tapes used in the language labs are housed at the Information Desk. Students must purchase a blank tape from the TLC and use the high speed duplication equipment to make each copy. This process takes about three minutes per tape. The TLC does not house tape copies for review purposes.
Production of Videotapes
The TLC has one room equipped with a video camera and television that students may reserve. Students may also reserve self-contained camcorders by following the guidelines listed in Audiovisual Equipment and Supplies. The TLC does not house video editing equipment for student use.
