  • What is a Legal Hold?

    • An order to cease destruction of and preserve all records, regardless of form, related to the nature or subject of the legal hold.

  • Who provides notice of a legal hold?

    • University Counsel’s office

  • What happens when you get a notice?

    • Read it and pay close attention to it.

    • Whatever you do, don’t ignore the notice.

    • Your records retention program is immediately suspended even though the schedule might otherwise permit destruction.

  • How long will I have to preserve evidence?

    • As long as it takes.

    • University Counsel’s office will determine and communicate when a legal hold may be lifted and evidence no longer preserved.
