How often does a National Football League team come to UNCG to interview a student? Not very often. Maybe never. But there's a first time for everything.

Summer reading imageCool stories for hot days

Books, books, books. Even if you're not a big reader, summer seems ready-made for hours in the hammock, by the pool or even at the beach with a book. You probably have a long list of books you want to read already, but we thought it would be fun to share some of our staff favorites with you. After all, you can never have too many book recommendations.

Reading lists

In addition to our staff favorites, we asked some folks around campus what they're reading this summer. Check out their answers.

Alumni authors

And if that wasn't enough, take a look at what your fellow alumni have written.

Tony Fragola has a story to tell about the land of his ancestors. But not the story you might imagine.

Reaching a new Leavel

If you're in New York or planning a trip in the near future, check out Beth Leavel '80 MFA in her newest role as Florence Goldberg, the housewife who manages the Shirelles in Broadway's “Baby It's You!” In addition to receiving a Tony Award for her earlier role in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” she was nominated for the Best Actress Tony Award in “Baby It's You!”

If you're not headed to NYC, watch this video clip where Leavel answers questions ranging from naming her guilty pleasures to her favorite Shirelles' song.

Rackstraw Downes imageAn outside view

A survey exhibition of Rackstraw Downes' “observation” paintings will be at the Weatherspoon Art Museum through Aug. 21 in the Bob & Lissa Shelley McDowell gallery. Take a look at a sampling of his work.

Story time

Stories are powerful. A well-told story even more so. This year, storyteller Bobby Norfolk will share his tales with area school children and the public Sept. 12.
