Founded in 1891, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is one of the three original campuses comprising The University of North Carolina system. The University has a long-standing commitment to academic excellence. UNCG is a research university with high research activity (Carnegie classification). The fall 2007 enrollment totals approximately 14,000 undergraduate students and 3,000 graduate students. 68% of the undergraduate students are female and 32% are male. Of the undergraduate students 8% are from out-of-state, 21% are African-American, and 31% live in residence halls. Undergraduates have a choice of over 100 areas of study from which to select a major leading to one of seven undergraduate degrees. There are 23 doctoral programs, four Master of Fine Arts Degrees, and 59 master’s degree programs in a wide variety of majors and concentrations. Among its 911 faculty members are nationally known scholars who regularly contribute to new knowledge in their fields through research and other creative work.
