August 2009
It may only be August, but it's not too early to start thinking about basketball. Especially men's basketball.
This year the Spartans will take to the floor on their new home court Greensboro Coliseum.
And what a season: Clemson. Wake Forest. NC State. Maryland. In addition to these ACC match-ups, the Spartans will also play host to East Carolina and traditional Southern Conference rivals Appalachian State, Elon, College of Charleston and more.
It's definitely challenging, UNCG coach Mike Dement said in an article that appeared in the July 17 News & Record. … We're trying to make this move (to the coliseum) and make it a big move.
We're looking at it as helping us in three ways. No. 1, playing that kind of schedule will prepare us for our Southern Conference games in every way possible. No. 2, we hope it will enhance our recruiting. Kids who want to play that kind of schedule, particularly kids from the state of North Carolina, will find us attractive. And No. 3, our present players will raise the level of their offseason commitment to improving their strength and conditioning and skills.
