Making the season bright

Walking into the Virginia Dare Room of the Alumni House on Dec. 5 was like walking into a pre-lit Christmas tree forest. Thirty-five trees — some with colored lights, some with clear, but all with otherwise bare branches — awaited the moment when the contest would begin. Read more about Branches of Love, an annual competition that ends with giving.

Branches of Love tree decorating contest

Susan Hensley, a member of the UNCG Alumni Geeks team, holds up a child so she can place a hand-painted cookie ornament on their tree. The group, which also included Dana Gaspar and Teresa Shorter, took home the award for “best homemade ornaments.”

Hope

Several Christmases ago, I received a purple velvet star embroidered with the word, “Hope.” On the back of the star was a tiny pocket just waiting for something special … and after much thought, I wrote the first stanza of Emily Dickinson's poignant poem on a little piece of paper and inserted it into that tiny pocket. This past year, with its unexpected twists and turns, the words of that powerful poem have gone through my mind many, many times. Read more about Linda Carter's wishes for alumni and hopes for the year to come.

A friendly competition

Think sports are tough? How about Twitter? Chancellor Linda P. Brady and men's basketball Coach Mike Dement have a friendly little competition going — who can get the most new Twitter followers. Read more about what's at stake.

Spartan spot

We all know the Greensboro Coliseum is the place to be on game nights. But there's a special section in the coliseum designed to make game nights even more fun. Read more about the best — and cheapest — seats in the house.

Student success

For some students, learning to study at college is more difficult than they expected. Luckily for them, the Student Success Center is there to help. And now you, as alumni, can help as well. Read more about how you can make a difference in the life of a student.

Alumni Association Announcements & Upcoming Events

Just because students are home on break doesn't mean basketball comes to a stop. Cheer the Spartans on Dec. 31 at Greensboro Coliseum. Also, start planning for Schmooza Palooza, coming Jan. 27. Learn more about these and other upcoming events.
