Living and learning

It may be happening in Chicago, but it also could happen in an area near you.

The Discovery Chicago Externship program — now in its third year — pairs students with alumni for a two-week living and learning experience.

Next week, three UNCG students will board a plane for Chicago to take their places beside alumni in a chamber of commerce, a university human resources department and a research library. The students will not only work with alumni — they'll live with them as well.

The students get a great deal. The short-term externship allows students to sample a career with hands-on experience and see what it's like to live and work in a major metropolitan area.

“It's a meaty experience,” said Linda Carter, executive director of the Alumni Association, which co-sponsors the externship. “[In addition to the work experience, students get] what we call ‘porch time.’ Talking with alumni about their careers, the work/life balance and how UNCG helped shape that.”

In turn, alumni — who help fund the program — get a glimpse of UNCG today, seeing how things change and how the fundamentals — a commitment to service and academic excellence — remain the same.

While the externships are unpaid, airfare to Chicago is covered and the opportunity to “try out” a career is invaluable.

The Alumni Association and UNCG Career Services are hoping to expand the program into other metropolitan areas. If you would like to offer an externship to a student, contact Carter at or call the Alumni Office at (336) 334-5696.
