Peace and joy

Holiday greetings from Linda Carter, executive director of the Alumni Association

Recently, in the months after my family lost our beloved great Aunt Frances — the last of that wonderful generation on my mother's side of the family — I received an envelope from her daughter, Nancy, containing a number of old photographs of my mother that Aunt Frances had among her possessions. My mamma always wrote little commentaries on the back of photographs. In the years since her death — almost 25 years ago — I've loved to gaze at her handwriting and read extra meaning into the phrases she wrote on the reverse of these treasured photos. One of the photos was of Mamma at age 18 in 1951, gleefully laughing and simply beautiful. On the reverse she wrote, “The building in the background is Gray Hall — where I stay.”

The very same Gray Hall where generations of Woman's College and almost 5 decades of UNCG students have stayed: living, learning, and discovering who they are as individuals.

I am reminded every morning as I walk to the Alumni House of the wealth of characters that make up UNCG — from students rushing to their morning classes to the dedicated facilities crew who keep our campus clean and beautiful; the faculty members awaiting students' arrivals in classes and staff members, like me, who are evaluating our “to do's” for the day. And our family of more than 100,000 alumni making their own distinct and positive marks on our world. I'd like to think the faculty, staff and students back in 1951 experienced the same wonderful feeling.

Call me an optimist but I'm holding on to that feeling. In the midst of all the uncertainty each of our worlds offer, it's what keeps me going.

The UNCG Alumni Relations team members — for whom I am enormously grateful — wish you peace and joy…now and for the coming year.
