Last month, UNCG announced its new scholarship program, the UNCG Guarantee. Now, alumni are being asked to provide a pivotal piece for its success mentorship.
Thirty-five to 40 mentors are being sought to work with the first group of UNCG Guarantee scholars.
As mentors, alumni will have an up-close look at the next generation of UNCG alumni. They will encourage students by meeting with them throughout the school year, maybe over ice cream at Yum Yum or coffee at Tate Street. Mentors and students will be encouraged to attend UNCG concert and lecture offerings, athletic events and off-campus activities such as theatre productions and concerts.
Mentors may even allow their scholar to shadow them at work for a day.
In addition to the one-on-one component, scholars and mentors will have three opportunities during the school year to meet as a group on campus. A group service project is also planned.
The benefit to scholars is huge not only will they graduate from UNCG with little to no debt, but their experience will be made richer having strong social support and balanced academic and student life experiences.
For the mentors, it's a meaningful volunteer experience unlike any other.
Mentors should expect to spend at least five hours a month with their scholar throughout the academic year.
To become a mentor, contact Linda Carter, director of Alumni Relations, at firstname.lastname@example.org or (336) 256-2014. Volunteers will complete a mentor volunteer form and profile and must consent to a background check.
