Athletics cheer

If you're a Spartan fan, you have lots to cheer about these days.

This year, Ashley Schnell won the women's individual title in cross country and, along with Paul Chelimo, became the first runner in school history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

For starters, both the men's and women's cross country teams won their SoCon titles this year. Not only that, but Ashley Schnell won the women's individual title, repeating her victory from last year, and Paul Chelimo, in his first year at UNCG, took the SoCon individual title for men.

Just last week, Chelimo and Schnell became the first runners in school history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Joey Thompson also earned a bid to nationals as an at-large selection.

Their coach, Linh Nguyen, hasn't gone unnoticed either. He was named SoCon Coach of the Year for women's and men's cross country.

“To take both individual titles and both team titles is something you daydream about, but rarely ever happens,” he said. “I can't say enough about these student-athletes and their level of hard work and commitment.”

In basketball news, things are heating up on the court. The men's team held its home opener this week, with a Nov. 17 tailgate party at the Greensboro Coliseum Pavilion. Those who attended had fun with a cornhole competition, inflatables, face painting and prizes. The game against UNC Pembroke ended with a 71-58 win for the Spartans.

UNCG won a national school spirit competition to earn tailgate festivities sponsored by Zipcar, a car-sharing provider that is part of UNCG's sustainability efforts. Votes came in through Facebook and UNCG pulled in five times as many votes as any other university.

Women's basketball kicked off their season Nov. 11, with their new coach, Wendy Palmer. Look for an interview with Palmer in the fall issue of UNCG Magazine.
